? about pain meds absorption

Recommended Posts

Another person's thread got me to wondering about this. Should I assume that after gastric bypass the malabsorption will also prevent oral narcotic pain medicines from being absorbed properly? And can you estimate how much gets absorbed?

There is generally no problem with absorption of narcotic pain medication after gastric bypass. We usually recommend Lortab Elixir which contains a combination of mild narcotic and acetaminophen. It is quickly absorbed because it is a liquid, and it doesn't lead to as much grogginess or constipation as heavier duty medications such as Percocet or Dilaudid.
