Hair Loss

Recommended Posts

Even though I knew it was going to happen I still am surprised that I am losing hair. You can see my scalp now and I hate it!

It is all part of the process though. I haven't updated my stats but I am 86 pounds down and loving every second of it.

Sorry I have been M.I.A guys but I have been really busy. Hope you guys are well! :)

86lb down is excellent progress Artie - congratulations!

I can't help on the hair loss I'm afraid.  I didn't lose much of an hair but what I had turned grey pretty much overnight and the texture change to from thick to fine and curly (I was in my early to mid 50's so that came as no surprise).

Thank you, yes I heard by about month 7 it should stop or at least slow down some.

Thank you it really is!

Thank you! I will just have to suck it up and understand that losing 86 pounds in 4 months is a major shock to my body

I feel you so much on the hair front! My loss started at the end of month three and is continuing. I'm hoping and praying it ends in the next couple months!

I'm in the same boat here, Artie.  Hairloss started around three months....I'm in month five now....and I'm not bald yet!  I can style it different ways to try to get it less noticeable.... And I'm down to washing it every three days to lessen strain on it. I'd rather have thinner hair if it's accompanied by a thinner body than thicker hair with a thicker body!!!

I've heard it slows at six then starts the long process of growing back.... So let's hope that's true!

Congrats on the awesome weight loss!!!!

Yep, the hair loss started at month three for me as well, and like CJ and Delilas above, I'm right about to hit 5 months out. Fingers crossed it stops soon! I swear there can't be that much left to lose! :)

86 pounds is great. Congrats!!

My hair loss is juuuuust slowing down now.  I would say it was worst in months 4 and 5, then slacked off.  I'm just starting month 8 now.  I'll be glad the hair loss stops altogether - I'd really like to look a bit more feminine, but I'm not growing my hair out from this boy-cut until I get some more of it back!

I’m a year out and the hair loss continues. I used to be a daily hair washer but now I was every three days or so. I bought some dry shampoo to see if I can can get away with washing it every four or five days.

Congrats on the massive weight loss! I bet your entire body is feeling the benefits of WL.

Thank you! My body is sure feeling fantastic, even picked up sports I couldn't do anymore because of my weight.

Hair loss is something minor compared to not being able to breath after tying my shoes :)

Congratulations on the 86 pound loss! That is fantastic in only 4 months. I am only 3 weeks out. Not at all looking forward to losing my hair. I will have no issue getting a buzz cut if need be :D

Congratulations on the 86 pound loss! You should be extremely proud of yourself. I'll be two months out at the end of this week and I have only lost 32 pounds since I had surgery. I haven't really lost any hair. I may have lost a few extra strands of hair than normal, but it is not like clumps of hair like most people have told me that hair loss would be like after surgery.

You're doing well Zelda.  You've averaged a daily loss of just over 1/2 a pound a day.  That is excellent.

I'm 4.5 years out and still losing hair. Scalp starting to show. I honestly regret having the surgery. The hair loss has been devastating. I followed the rules but the loss continues. Btw all those hair treatments that work for balding men don't work for this type of hair loss. I've never been so sad.

Is your thyroid OK?  Seems really unusual to have continued hair loss related to the surgery itself this far out.  Ferritin and TIBC OK? I am sorry that you're experiencing this; I hope that you are at least happy with your weight loss journey and your health?

Oh dear @Bald eagle 1996 ...that doesn't sound good at all. What do your doctors say is the reason? Hopefully you can shave it? Men look so good bald....I wish I could when I start to lose mine! Perhaps it's time to embrace it and shave it bald and shiny??  :):)   And like @msmarymac said, hopefully overall you're happy with your weight loss and health?

On an unrelated non-weight loss related reason, I have a friend who is a 19 year old girl who had hair down to her butt. She recently started going completely bald in patches on her head and lost 1 eyebrow. All in different areas.  Now if that were me at 19, I'd wear a wig or always wear a hat or scarf. This darling, brave girl didn't cut her hair off and rocked her splotchy head. When people asked, she explained she had alopecia caused by stress. And she got strange looks from many people who didn't bother to ask, but she seriously stood strong in herself and figured she had to live with it, so she did. It finally (almost a year later and several holistic and attempted medical treatments later) decided to start growing back in most, but not all of the bald spots. (we're talking some of the spots were up to 4" in diameter) and so she's letting it grow. But she still has her long hair on the rest of her head. It wasn't enough to cover all the spots.

I know that may not relate to what you are going through, but I tell myself that if a 19 year old beautiful girl can rock her partial baldness that seriously looked crazy and have confidence in herself to do it, I can too when it starts to thin or disappear.  I hope by hearing this....you can have faith in yourself and rock the new look you've been given. I hope to have that same confidence some day - even though it's so hard.

@Brattykid, just an update from my April post....my hair loss slowed down a lot by the end of month 5.  I stopped losing but then it starting growing back in...then in months 8-9 i was plagued by “baby hairs” sticking up all over which drove me nuts bc you can’t comb them down, they just stuck up all over, but especially at my hair line so i had a halo of sticking up hair, but now that i am in month 11 they have gotten long enough to behave....still short but like 2” or so now so they lay down better.  Overall it wasn’t half as bad as i thought it was going to be especially since i started out w/ very thin hair that would shed a lot anyway.  Don’t fear it, it might not be as bad as you think it will be and I still stand by what i said before i would rather have thin hair and a thin body than fat hair and a fat body! :D
