Borderline anemic after 18 months

Recommended Posts

hi all!

I just got back from the ER. Went in with abdominal pain and general discomfort. After a battery of tests, they determined that my tummy is once again irritated/unhappy and I need to get back on Omeprazole & Carafate (boo!). At least I know what to expect with those treatments.

The doc also discovered that I'm almost anemic (11.8 is the cut-off point on the anemia scale, and I'm at 11.9). I take my 60 mg of iron (Celebrate Iron+C) every day and try to eat red meat and veggies. What more can I do?

Does anyone out in TT land have any suggestions for maximizing iron intake?

Thanks again!

I have recently been diagnosed with borderline anemia too. They think it may be related to heavy periods, but I also have cut back on meat because I was having trouble digesting it. The kind of iron you take matters too. GB drs recommend taking ferrous fumerate 325mg once a day. I buy it on Amazon. It has the most elemental iron available. Not that expensive and no constipation side effects! I can give you the name of it if you want. I also take 500mg of Vitamin C with the iron because it is supposed to help the body absorb iron.

I learned that calcium can keep the body from absorbing iron properly too, so I have to not take the iron within 4 hours of my calcium pill. Timing all these pills can be daunting!

My dr says once I get my iron stores back up, I can probably stop taking the iron except when I am having a period.

I was so exhausted all winter, had chapped lips and terrible cramps in my legs. With the iron, I feel 100% better.

I am servely anaemic and im a pharmacist !, i take almost leathal doses of iron until i learnt with GB its very difficult to absorb iron that is commercially available as it absorbes through the small intestine. I have researched this extensively about 5% of GB will develop pernicious aneamia due to low iron, the only iron your body will absorb are eating Liver - chicken livers a excellent as is beef, there is a company in Collorado it makes heme iron which is what we need, thet sell in under the name of Proferrin, I have ordered it cant wait, I am getting a reversal though due to all my health issues,, but try this brand ok hope it helps :)

Forgot to mention Ferrous Fum is a bad iron to take as it stops the uptake of Vit E, so you get extremly dry with this iron....

I saw a hemotologist and she had me quit taking iron then retested me. She says there is no difference between my taking iron and not taking iron. That some bodies do not absorb iron and mine appears to be one of those. That I'm wasting money taking iron as well as contributing to constipation if I do take it.

I have severe anemia. I am two years out and have had three blood transfusions. I was at 5 when i was tested all three times. I now take B12 shots. I am considered pernicious anemia. I am always tired, which makes it hard to workout and just do normal things.

I have tried to eat healthy. I do not think it is about what im eating as it is more about my body doesnt absorb iron from food. I have apt next month with specialist.
