  1. And if so, is it often, or once in a while, and is it something we can avoid by our behavior? And how long will it last? I think this is one of the things that worries me a lot - will I go back to my office job in 2 weeks and be spending time in the rest rooms? Ick!!! Thanks for helping us pre-ops know what's coming!

    Practically back to where I started

    I'm so sorry you've had to go through so much! You are here, though, and that's what's important. I wanted to comment on the danger of the alcohol. I picked up a drinking habit a few years ago (I'm almost 7 years out), not severe, but perhaps 1-2 hard ciders a day, or else a glass of wine. Eventually I started having a lot of nausea, and an endoscopy showed that I had two ulcers at the base of my pouch. The doctor said that I had to stop drinking, completely, and that if I didn't I would probably end up needing additional surgery to repair holes in the join of the pouch to the intestine. I stopped drinking for a couple of months, tried a glass of wine a week, got sick. Stopped drinking for six months, tried a glass of wine now and then, got sick. Finally I understood that this was a life long commitment, and I've not had a drink in about 2 years. I ask for "mocktails" in restaurants and bars, and look up recipes for them, bartenders can sometimes be quite creative and there are lots of really tasty alternatives you can come up with using seltzer water and various herbs, juices, etc, depending on what you can tolerate. We made a choice to change our lives, and we just have to remember to use the tool, respect the restrictions, and count our blessings. You can do this!!!! Judy
  3. G'day folks. I'm going on 6 years post-op and generally doing fine. This past weekend, however, strange things happened. I went to a dinner party, and was having trouble swallowing - food just seemed to sit in the back of my mouth and I felt I couldn't swallow it, though I managed eventually. Then, I had a hypoglycemic attack, was sweating and confused, got up to go to bathroom and passed out briefly. Seemed fine after. Next day, I was exhausted all day and had some trouble swallowing again and absolutely could not eat some beef and brussels sprouts leftovers from a restaurant meal a few days before, made me very nauseous. Also couldn't eat much supper at all, just got full very fast. Today, very tired again, some issues with swallowing. All of this adds up to pretty much nothing in particular, just a weird combination of things. Does it ring any bells with anyone? I really do not have any other symptoms, DH has been very worried but there's nothing else other than the cold I've had for about a week now. Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

    Odd symptoms - Can't swallow, exhausted

    The only thing I can say about long term is just a sense that I have some trouble, once in a while, with reading aloud - I'll stumble over a word here or there, and it seems a bit more frequent than it used to be - I have always enjoyed reading aloud and am reasonably good at it. Otherwise I seem to be fine - like I said, I was VERY fortunate. We did blood work, my cholesterol looks really good but the neurologist says that after a stroke you want to try to get your LDL value at 70 or below, so I am on a statin - mine was 80, which was excellent, but we are trying to get it somewhat lower. Plus, I do take a baby aspirin daily now, ran that by my gastric bypass practice of course, they see no problem with it. Thanks for asking, and remember that "FAST" acronym.

    Odd symptoms - Can't swallow, exhausted

    Hi guys. Checking in with the eventual outcome of this episode. What I didn't mention here, evidently, was that the day before I'd had an episode where I had trouble talking for 2-3 minutes - it felt like I was drunk and I was having to speak slowly in order to speak clearly. It was weird, but it went away, and then the experience described above seemed like low blood sugar stuff, so I ultimately did nothing. Subsequently in the fall I had an appointment with a new general practicioner and in passing I mentioned that to him, and he ordered various tests which ended up with seeing a neurologist, who said the 3 minutes of speech problems was a minor stroke, and he could see some damage in the speech centers of the brain MRI I had. I have absolutely no idea if the symptoms I described above were related to the stroke, or what - they don't seem to be, but who knows. Subsequently I've been fine (thankfully) so, I guess I will count my blessings. I will say, however, that it's important for all of us as we get older to be aware of the symptoms of a stroke, as outlined by the acronym FAST - Face drooping, difficulties using an Arm, Speech difficulties, Tell someone. I clearly had speech difficulties, and if I'd been aware of that symptom list I might have done something. As it was, I was very lucky that nothing else happened, because the neurologist says the first 48 hours after the initial stroke are the most dangerous. So, folks, remember "FAST", it might save your life someday!!! Blessings to you all...

    Freaked out

    I find that coming back to this forum on a daily basis when I'm struggling really helps me. I regain sight of the important things, and regain confidence in myself. You can DO THIS!!!!
  7. I did a search on here, and see that "burning tongue" is a symptom of some kind of nutrient deficiency, but I can't find out what specifically is the issue. Anyone know? I've been having intermittent/frequent bouts where the inside of my mouth hurts, or just feels uncomfortable. Mouthwash can ease it for a while, but it's definitely a persistent issue and I want to figure out what's going on. Thanks for any info you can share.
  8. I'm 4 years and a few months out from surgery. Lately I experience a burning sensation in my lower chest when I wake up in the middle of the night, and sometimes during the day. I always have gas, that seems a given, but don't seem to have anything coming up when I burp or anything. Should I talk to my doctor about this? It seems like no big deal, but it is definitely new and annoying/worrisome. Thanks, folks.

    Well, finally had an endoscopy, I have several ulcers in the top of the small intestine, just below where it joins the pouch . The doctor says it's almost certainly from alcohol, though she also did a biopsy to check for the bacteria that is implicated in many ulcers, and says I can't drink, ever. I'm resigned, I guess, but it does make me sad, because I really enjoy trying different wines. As I think I said before, I don't know how some people can manage to develop alcohol problems and live with them after this surgery - evidently not everyone is as sensitive to it. In the long run I do know that I'll be healthier, but ... sigh. Anyway, counting my blessings, still wouldn't ever choose to go back to the way I was before the surgery.

    In case anyone is reading this, or wondering, surgeon's office said gastritis, put me on carafate and omeprozole, plus zofran as needed for the nausea. The alcohol seems to be the only thing I'm doing wrong, and as noted I'm going to have to generally give it up, most likely. I find that if I drink a glass of wine or a hard cider I get severe sudden-onset nausea about 1.5 days later - odd delay. They are going to do an endoscopy to actually take a look. I'm pretty much resigned to giving it up now, sigh. The nausea is quite persuasive. I don't really understand how some people here have alcohol problems - does it not necessarily cause problems with everyone? My practice hasn't tested for the heliobactor pyloris yet (sp?) either, so I suppose that could be an issue, but I accept that drinking with a RNY is a bad idea generally...

    Finally getting a handle on weight gain

    I too am hypersensitive to carbs when I'm eating healthy. I'll crash really low, reflect on what I ate, and it seems like it was all normal foods. We absolutely have to be careful.

    I'd suggest going back to what you were told when you started post-op, specifically guidelines to portion sizes, types of foods, etc. Lots of protein and low carb veggies, very few if any carbs, a bit of fruit. No drinking with your meals. You did this once, you can do it again. And, as suggested, start with the 5 day pouch test, that will shake you out of some of your bad habits initially and then you can ease back into it. I am rooting for you - believe in yourself. Also, it's summer, so there are lots of good fresh veggies and you have lots of interesting exercise options. I always do better in the summer because I can be more active, biking, walking, etc. Whatever you enjoy - exercise always helps to keep my weight from fluctuating. Keep us posted!!!!!

    I drink 3 cups of coffee. I DREAD having to give that up too!!! My reading on ulcers says that now they think coffee doesn't cause problems, but who knows, surgeon's practice may feel otherwise. I'm really struggling with nausea this week, no vomiting (yet) but from mid morning on through late afternoon most days - bleah. I've had to give up alcohol and suspect that may be permanent, to give up coffee too will be the pits. Oh well, life does go on I suppose, and I still feel like it is worth it so I guess I should stop whining.

    I called the surgeon's office today, they are putting me on Omeprazole (prescription dose) and seeing me in a week, and banning all alcohol between now and then. Sigh. After reading about ulcers after GB though, I get that it's clearly nothing to mess with and I'm willing to do whatever it takes, including unfortunately cleaner living at least for a while. I hope they don't make me give up coffee, but I fear that will be next. Thanks so much for the comments and suggestions, I'll come back with an update when I have more info.

    You know it's funny - I assumed I would never need antacids, because there's no stomach left, at least not above the intestine where acid could come up, right? The mechanics must be totally different now - acid comes up from intestine, through pouch, to esophagus if that were indeed what's happening? In any event, thanks, I will call my bariatric doctor's office and see what they say.
  16. I'm wondering if anyone has any specific info on requirements for protein long-term post op - 4 years plus is where I'm at. I consume quite a lot of protein, plus veggies/fruits and occasionally a bit of bread/potato/pasta, but I don't know if I should really be trimming back on the protein and leaning more heavily on veggies, for instance? Wondering about heart health. My cholesterol is excellent, but I do eat across the spectrum of beef/pork/chicken/some fish, and am concerned about the effect of such a diet - do I still need all that protein? I'm also somewhat concerned about the effect on my non-GBP husband (who also has excellent cholesterol, btw). He eats the carbs I don't, but he also eats/enjoys the meats. Thanks, friends!!

    Fiber, Liquids and an ER visit

    I live in mortal fear of constipation! I've had excellent success avoiding it by having 2 Tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily in my breakfast yoghurt. I find I can't eat raisin bran or the likes, it doesn't have enough protein and I go hypoglycemic an hour or so later. So, just a good word for the benefits of flaxseed :-).

    Late Dumping Syndrome

    Just had to chime in to mention that I get reactive hypoglycemia after every thanksgiving dinner! :-). I never eat enough turkey, thinking that "a bit of this, a bit of that, it's all healthy..." will be fine, and it never is fine!!!! I get it other times too, in response to making bad food choices, but the Thanksgiving thing is instructive - definitely need to work on that one.

    Sunny52, we have to say no to the sweets. I too got pretty good at eating them - found that as long as I eat them after sufficient protein I don't go hypoglycemic. Lousy thing to learn! We don't need them. We never did, and they are basically poison to us, with respect to our well-being as a whole. I'm working really hard on losing the 16 lbs I've regained since my surgery, and for me it's about: 1. NO snacks. Not even healthy ones. 2. Drink every bit of the 64+ oz of water, plus more if possible. It keeps us from eating junk. 3. Protein and veggies are our focus, with a fruit or two daily. 4. If I need to allow a treat, let it be special and include it at the meal, re-read rule #1. Perhaps you need to try other proteins? Beans, cheese, milk, eggs, fish? Things that sit better in your pouch. We can do this! Hang in there and don't ever give up.

    Reset

    I'm struggling with regain (20 lbs from my absolute lowest, generally 16 lbs from my lowest sustainable weight) and for me the number one issue is NO SNACKS!!! A little bit here, a little bit there, it adds up into a whole lot overall. The nutritionist said there was absolutely no need to snack (I know that some people have blood sugar issues, but this is for someone who doesn't) and she is so right. My meals are reasonable, generally, protein plus veggie or fruit, it's the snacks that piled on the pounds, that plus being 3+ years out and my body is very efficient at using every calorie now, it seems. The number two issue is water consumption. I've gotten really bad at consuming the 64 oz+ that we are supposed to consume a day, and when I keep a big glass of water by me all day (and make myself finish it) I'm much less likely to snack. It's tough, but it's worth it. I look at it this way - I only have 16-20 lbs to lose now, instead of 138!!!!!!!!!!! I can manage that, a little at a time, just by cleaning up my act.     How much ALCOHOL is too much for us?

    In response to cinwa, and generally on the topic, I wish I could commit to "never want[ing] to drink alcohol", because: * way too many calories * it is SO tempting * it is so easy to want more, and more, and ... My husband is a recovering alcoholic, and he likes a glass of wine once in a while. I'm ok with that, as long as that's all it is, but for me it's so easy to want to drink the hard ciders on the in-between days, more than one of them, and the calories and sugars in them are terrible for me. Alcohol is all too tempting, and if we can just commit to not ever having it we'll be SO much better off. Working on this issue myself, it's hard.
  22. So, I asked the physician's assistant a lot of questions yesterday, based on info I have gotten here, and received some surprising/puzzling answers. My doctor doesn't recommend more than 40 grams of protein per day - they just don't think we need it!! I thought that we needed 60-90 grams, based on what others are saying, because we need it to keep/build muscle, but they say that our diets as humans just don't need to be so high-protein. They also don't allow protein drinks after the first two weeks post-op. Should I be worried? I did order Unjury chicken broth and unflavored protein and plan on using them to supplement past the first few weeks - doctor's reasoning is protein drinks have too many calories, but those shouldn't have many as long as I'm careful. Should I just go ahead and aim for higher protein count ongoing? Thanks for your informed thoughts on this matter.

    Belly Fat!

    I do have to say that it is also (at least for me, and I believe for many) the FIRST to come back! One thing that helps me is doing 40 crunches at least 4 days a week - gives me muscles that hold it in to a certain extent.

    Finding sanity...

    Greetings, kind folks. I'm just past my 3 year mark, and hanging in there reasonably well. I regained about 10 lbs, but am holding, and I want to lose those 10 lbs. What I'm struggling with is getting past the crazy thinking that made me fat in the first place, and I'd really appreciate insights from those of you who feel like you've dealt with this successfully. Again and again (and again and ...) I find myself stressed, and grabbing things that I don't need and shouldn't have and eating them, and regretting it. Then I do great for a while, then it happens again. I think what I really need is to learn to calm myself down, slow down, and be rational. When I do manage that, I can conquer the "crazies", but I'm not very good at finding that calm quiet place, particularly when I'm at work which is stressful by nature. At home, I mostly do fine, or if I do get a minor "crazies" attack I can quell it with healthy stuff, but there are too many bad choices available at work. So - how do you do it? Thanks, friends, and I wish you all a peaceful and joyful holiday season...
  25. That food addiction thing is so true. I slid back into bad habits, and I'm fighting it now by coming here, counting calories, and working to avoid my sweets/carbs addiction (I only dump if I eat sweet things on an empty stomach, and I unfortunately learned how to get around that issue?!?). Drinking LOTS of water helps, coming here and reading posts like yours (nikki) and the responses definitely helps, thanks for bringing it up!!! I guess we never really can let our guard down, this is a lifelong effort, and like AA we have to "Keep Coming Back".
