I want to share my gastric bypass surgery experience that I had done in Mexico on February 12, 2018. I am a U.S. citizen living in Mexico for the last 5 years. I was referred to Doctor Francisco Javier Haro Valdez in Guadalajara to perform my surgery. My first consultation was back in October when I weighed in at 270 lbs. I am male that is 5' 11" and had a BMI of 38. I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma and degenerative disc disease. I have had two lower back surgeries and two cervical surgeries. Dr. Valdez had me meet with his nutritionist who put me on a high protein diet and helped me with recipes and meal planning. From October to February I lost about 40 lbs but my BMI still put me as obese. My surgery was performed at Hospital Country 2000 in Guadalajara, right next door to Dr. Valdez's office.
My wife and I rented a one bedroom apartment I found on Airbnb. It was about 2 miles from the hospital. We were able to bring our 3-year-old, 3 lb chihuahua and my wife took the bus back and forth to the hospital while I stayed there for the 3 days recovery. So the surgery went well with no problems. No complications. The hospital was clean and modern and the staff was extremely courteous and helpful. I got a private room, and if needed, wy wife was welcome to stay the night. They had extra linens, blankets and a small cot in the room.
I am now two months post-op and am still losing the weight. I am now out of the obese category. I am weighing in at 210 lbs and my BMI is down to 28. My blood pressure has gone down and I am no longer taking blood pressure meds. My asthma seems to have improved and I am not taking inhalers like I used to. And my wife says that I am no longer snoring nor having breathing issues when I sleep.
The entire procedure cost $6,000 USD and included 6 months of follow up visits.
