Default Pre-Op Diet question

Hi all,

With my op date looming (23rd July) I had my pre op chat with my surgeon and the pre op nurse.

They would like me to get my BMI down to <50 prior to surgery (currently 54) so it means trying to lose 3 stone in 3 weeks (a very hard task).

So what i am doing is (as I KNOW the liquid diet is going to kill me) starting today on a 1 x liquid only diet day, then a liquid diet day with a healthy sandwhich thrown in, then a liquid only diet day, then a sandwhich day and so forth up until the 9th, when the liquid pre op diet kicks in full time. is this a good idea???

My question is.... "is the liquid pre-op diet purely a calorie controlled diet?" meaning as well as the 4 x weightwatcher soup and 4 muller light yoghurts could I eat a plain salad which would have no calorific value? or does it have to be this liquid only for a particular reason?

Just so i dont feel hungry??

Any advice would be great.

Carl

hi carl

first off, congrats! you're in for a hell of a ride.

secondly, for the liquid portion of your diet you really want to stick only to the liquids. It will help not only clean your dietary tract for surgery, but the liquids will also help all the fat and toxins out of the body if you're ... releasing more of them.

It is a low calorie, low fat, low.. everything kinda diet for a good reason. You need for your body to burn off as much of the fat from your liver as humanly possible before the surgery. At my size (31.7 st) at surgery, my liver was still incredibly large and difficult to perform the surgery around. I had lost 1.2st during my 2 week liquid diet. Anything you can do now will greatly improve the weight loss prior to that.

My own personal recomendation if you wanted to start early... have 2 liquid meals a day and a SMALL sensible dinner in the evening. By small.. 2-3 ounces of lean meat, 1-2 servings of vegetables. Try not to eat the grains, even if whole grains (that sammich every other day has a LOT with 2 slices of bread). Drink drink.. and then drink some more water or iced tea. Stay away from any sugary drinks or carbonation if you need to wean yourself. Same thing goes for alcohol. Its empty calories, do yourself a favor and avoid them.

Keep us updated on your progress!

All the best for your operation. The idea of the liquid diet is to shrink your liver before surgery. This makes the operation easier for the surgeon and helps prevent complications. The important thing is no carbohydrates at all. A sandwich is not a good idea as the bread is carbohydrate. If yu are struggling with liquids only contact your surgeon or one of his team to see if they can give you a carbohydrate free diet. All the best.
