Mexico Surgery?

30 posts in this topic

Hello,

I am in the process of gathering information on gastric sleeve surgery.  This is a self pay, and I have found that the prices in Mexico are about 1/3 of what I would pay in the US.  Has anyone gone through BeLiteWeight for surgery?  Would you share pros and cons?  I could travel to Tennessee from Cincinnati and have it done, cost is almost double through same company.  If I have it done in Cincinnati I am looking at a minimum of 17,000.

I appreciate any info.Certainly will have the surgery, I have to renew passport.

Thanks so much

Peanutz

Both of my sisters flew to San Diego and had the surgery done in Tijuana, Mexico.  They flew out on a Sunday, had the surgery on Monday, spent Monday night in the clinic in Tijuana, spent Tuesday night in a hotel in San Diego and flew home to Saint Louis on Wednesday and went back to work the following Monday.  They paid $10,000.00 each and if I'm not mistaken that included their airfare.  The problem was they didn't have the pre-care or the after-care.

I had the by-pass surgery, I spent a year seeing specialists, and being monitored before I was approved for surgery and will have follow-ups for the rest of my life.  Whatever you do make sure you have a strong support group that not only supports your decision but helps you through the ups and downs.

I hope you find a few options near your home, the after care is so important.

I would be very reluctant to go to someone that was not in my area - you need someone close by for the best care. Your health is an investment.

I have a friend that had his done in Tijuana and was so happy with his procedure. He has lost 220 lbs and just had his one year surgiversary. He has nothing but great things to say and said he thinks it was about $7k out of Texas and that included airfare and hotel for both him AMD his wife, plus the procedure. He said it was ultra clean and while they were very professional they Sid not coddle you. He said they woke him up and made him walk to his room stressing how important walking was. He had the VSG.

I'm not sure what the right solution for you is, but people travel all the time for procedures. Keep digging around, there is a lot out there.

Good Luck.

Certainly the preferable route is to find a surgeon close to home, but it sounds as if that is not going to be a possibility for you. So what you might want to consider is finding a nutritionist who specializes in WLS and developing that relationship so you have some idea what you're getting in to from a nutritional standpoint. And getting your PCP on board will also be a help so that you can have good medical follow up care. Good luck in all of this--I know there are some people who visit the forum who went the Mexico route and I hope they will weigh in with their experiences--which I don't recall as being negative.

I too had considered surgery in Mexico and was going to Tiajuana through San Diego.  I was going to a facility that was considered a Center of Excellence just like in the US. If you have to go that route look up The Obesity Control Center, I had found nothing negative on the internet about the place and it seemed very professional.  Good luck!

I have struggled with weight problem.for years. I am planning to have self pay in Mexico.Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and will ask about the duodenal switch .as well. Some docs are making it 15 mm used to be 20mm 20 is fine with me. I worry about severe reflux mainly. All I do understand is be careful and follow pre op and post op diet carefully and take vitamins.

One might .fear.Mexico and some people can even present with .leak up to 4- 6 months but I was told follow diet carefully. Some people can present a leak even after 7 days so I think I will stay there in mexico for one week or after first bowel movement.

It is a process and later plastic surgery and I plan.. to do that in mexico as well. God Bless friends..More to follow

There are very fine doctors in Mexico, so you should have no problem.  Here is the con.  if you do have problems afterwards, or need follow up care, no on here will want to touch you in the US.  You likely will have to fly back.  For me none of that would be an issue.

Good luck!

Hi, new here!

I want to share my experiences of weight loss surgeries.. I had the lap band done in Mexico 2005, and hated that thing! So I was able to get insurance this past year and went to Las Vegas with Dr Bernie Hannah through Belite to have a lap band removed and sleeved. The Dr was very unprofessional using the f**** word! I had infection after coming home, and didnt hear  a word more from Dr or Belite! That surgery was in August 2013 and I had only lost 27 pounds! I could eat way more than I should have been able to. So I decided after much prayer and research to go back to Mexico with A Lighter Me and Dr Elias Ortiz(A Lighter Me) for a sleeve or resleeve, I didnt actually know what Hannah did to me. I relooked the paper work over from thier office and all it said at top was lap band removal!                                                                                                                                                                                                      I was in surgery last week for 3 hours! Dr Ortiz said I was a mess and had a small stomach without any staples, hmmmm. But he DID sleeve me nice and tight and said I was going to be alright! Awesome Dr s in Mexico! Both experiences have been good and I would not be afraid to go! I have lost 9 pounds and feeling good! I have heard from Dr and coordinater and aftercare since being home! I continue to get emails about what to expect and what to eat or not. Total difference between Drs.  Hope this encourages someone!

    God Bless you all!

Do your homework. I am doing my procedure in Puerto Vallarta in May, and I have found an option for complication insurance. It is not super costly, but will be well worth it. I am going through an organization called MedToGo. They have been very up front and professional. I also know a person who went through the same organization and same surgeon and had an excellent experience.

Whatever you do, do your homework. I looked into Beliteweight, but I didnt feel like they were the right fit for me. Best of luck to you :)

I just wanted to say, just because a hospital is marked as a center of excellence, it doesnt meen they really are. I would do tons of research and make an informed decision based on that research. Don't pick a hospital because it's said to be a center of excellence. I've read a lot about this, they're a center of excellence because they do so many surgeries. Some doctors will do a few surgeries everyday. In my opinion, I'd rather have a surgeon who does 1 surgery a week instead of a center of excellence. The after care is just as important as the surgery. It's important to have a doctor that will sit down with you and discuss things. These surgeries are no joke, those surgeons have a very hard job. So i would avoid any surgeon who is over worked and greedy. My surgeon will do surgery on monday and friday and he only does 2 surgeries max. Your life is to important, please research and ask questions. I go with a list of them :)

Who are you considering in Cincinnati?  I had a band to sleeve revision there as well as my original lapband surgery though honestly, I wish I had went to Mexico, IMHO they've done it longer and they do it better!  Not all of them of coarse but there are a few amazing surgeons in Mexico and Dr. Rodriguez through Belite is one of them.

I had my surgery in TJ.  I went through a Canadian company which provides pre-op care, and support groups post op.  It was pricey - but worth every penny.  I believe I paid around $13,000 US.  HOWEVER, if you go through the TJ facility directly, I know it's cheaper.  Dr Pompa at LIMARP - Truly amazing.  Can't say enough wonderful things about her, the facility as well as the staff.  It is also a Center of Excellence.

As others said - Do you research.  Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Good luck!

I'm scheduled for 06/29/2015 with Dr Quinones.  He and his team came highly recommended by friends who work in the medical field here and did a boatload of research before having their sleeves.  Although I won't have the same level of in person support as if I had it done here in MT I will still have access to a remote support team.  I can also access local dieticians for a small fee.  Going the Mexico route is my only option since WLS is excluded by my insurance.

My sleeve was done on June 30... I can't say enough about the friendliness and professionalism I encountered with Dr Quiñones and staff.

He only did one surgery per day while I was there. Meds, bandage changes, and call button responses were promptly completed with a smile. An additional interpreter was present everytime a nurse came in and they made a point to tell me what and how things would be done and when.

Hi Peanutz,

I don't know about surgery abroad but was wondering: how are you insured? are you insured through your husband's work or your own? through healthcare.gov? open enrollment is just around the corner for healthcare.gov (november) and you or your husband's work should also have open enrollment.  Even medicare has open enrollment.  Check out the different types of plans available to you.  Some cover bariatrics and some don't.  Even if your premium goes up a little every month, it will be cheaper than paying out of pocket to have it done here.  I'm not against medical tourism at all, but I think there is a valid concern about aftercare.  I made sure to pick an insurance that covered bariatrics.  Just starting the process and it's annoying how many hoops the insurance puts you through.  But I'm glad I'll be local for surgery and aftercare.

Whatever you decide, best of luck! Also, there is a you tuber named Kayla who went to Mexico for surgery.  You can watch her videos and private message her, she has said she is very happy with her care in Mexico.  Good luck! xo

I have a nephew that went to Dr. Guillermo Alvarez in Piedras Negras, across from Eagle Pass, Texas.  He lost over 110 pounds in about 10 months.  This doctor is a specialist in sleeve surgery only and he too is on You Tube.  Endobariatric.com.  I have watched a bunch of his informative Youtube videos and honestly am impressed with him and his patients. He would be my choice of doctors if I had had to take that route but because I am on Medicare, I have to get my surgery here but here too, I have an awesome doctor.

Investigate, ask questions, see what other patients have to say about any doctor you choose especially if going to Mexico.  Most recently there have been several newspaper write ups about a doctor in Tijuana that is butchering people and getting away with it although he is under investigation.  Be informed!
