Alright, I will try and not make this long.. But About a year ago, when I was about 6 months post op, I started having severe chest pain. I seen the doctors and nothing could be found. So the past year, I have had severe chest pain that landed me in the ER 2 times now. The pain is now radiating from my upper left breast into my armpit. I also have pain in my neck, shoulder and some days, have tingling in my whole left arm. I have had MRIs, EKGs, chest xrays, OBGYN check-ups, dentist appts who said i may have TMJ but all the side effects, I dont have... and now I have an appt with a neurolgist on Dec 28th. Doctors told me that it may be a pinched nerve or muscle spasms.. But I am just afraid that its my heart. Its all on my left side and they "assured' me that my heart is fine. I know having this surgery takes a major toll on our bodies and I am just scared of having a heart attack at such a young age. But this is the healthiest I have ever been. I was just wondering if anyone who is like 1.5 years out or longer ever experienced anything like this.. Thanks!

I'm sorry you go through this. My pain is on the right side, and only started recently. I know this must be frightening for you. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep pushing them to figure it out.

I am 5 years out and I started having left side pain a few months ago. For a while I was told that it could be from simple things like not chewing good enough and mixing your food and drink. Going back on a liquid plan does seem to help it. I still consume 2 protein shakes a day and only one solid meal.It works the best for me. When I am told to add more solid and cut out the second shake, I start feeling terrible. Iron supplements do cause me pains, (sharp pains that feel almost like gas) so I have stopped taking them. I did break down and went to see an GI doc. (not the one who did my bypass) he told me that even though there are no complications immediately after the surgery he does see many problems like mine many years post op. So I am scheduled for an upper endoscopy in a few weeks. He's also adding the colonoscopy since it is age appropriate.

Have you ever had your spine examined? I had degenerative cervical discs and spinal stenosis, and my pain was very similar to yours.

I have an appt with a neuroligist in dec who deals with spine issues. I had the MRI for my neck and it came back saying i have a curviture in my spine but nothing abnormal.

What did you have done after you were diagnosed with this? I am just terrified that something is being overlooked. they thought a herniated disc but that came back fine also.

I had a spinal laminectomy (removing the back fishtale like bone), fusion and two rods (both sides) from C2-T1. I had many levels affected. Recovery was rough due to full length incision along the back of my neck. A lot of muscle spasms as the cut muscle healed. My neck was in really bad shape, literally falling over. Many discs were ruptured and spinal cord was being flattened. Now, I feel great and have my life back! My son-in-law had a bad disc and it was removed and replaced, by my surgeon, with an artificial disc and he is doing great. It was much less invasive and he was back to work in two weeks. Nerve damage is not anything to play around with. Unfortunately I waited, thinking it was aches and pains of aging with the osteoarthritis, I already suffer from. Big mistake! I now have nerve damage that causes numbness down my left arm and into my hand. I don't feel heat well in, either of my hands, which has caused burn issues. Thankfully, it is all numbness and no pain, so it's become my new normal. I consider the WLS to be another new normal for me, too! Good luck to you....keep us posted!

I will def mention all of this to the neuroligist. Thanks so much! I am in so much pain and they gave me a muscle relaxer and its not even touching the pain. the pain is so bad in my neck and jaw that i am now having trouble turning my head to the left. It was alwyas trouble turning to the right, but now its to the left. Each day, i feel like I am getting a different pain and it really its starting to mess with me! I def will keep everyone up to date.. just incase someone else is going through similar things! Thanks.... Amber

I have the same type of pain and i too have had every test known to man. I know when my magnesium tanks out it gets really really bad.
I take nuerontin which is for nerve pain and it helps alot. I go to a pain clinic for spinal epidural shots for my pelvic/sciatic/lower back pain and take vicodin as needed. I have an my regular every 3 month appt. with them this week. I'm going to ask them for cymbalta, because i have started geetting really achy muscles and joints and depression. I'm hopeing that will help along with the neurontin. Another thing i'm going to ask them is if they will do an mri on my left shoulder blade and the thoracic spinal area to see if there could be something fixable causing the pain.
The pain isnt there all the time, it hits me like a brick and then it is the most god awful pain. Ive landed in the er 3 times now. Everytime they tell me my heart and lungs are fine, follow up with your pcp. So i am done going to the er.
So the pain feels like someone is pulling my sternum out of my back. And i get tingling and numbness down my left arm and up into my head to where i'm foggy headed. My tongue even gets numb and tingles!
Then after it hits me like a brick i load up on my special liquid magnesium, b12 shots, and b1, and it slowly subsides over a 2 week period.
A lot of people have developed.peripheral neuropathy after gastric bypass. It just hasnt been publicized. I think your neurologist will be able to help you a great deal. =)

Thanks for the info! I looked up peripheral neuropathy and seriously, I have like all the symptoms. It is very scary sometimes, I feel very dizzy all the time, have the numbness, the pain, the lack of sexual activity, the muscle pain... its crazy.. I had the MRI and it all came back fine. Its not all the time, like you said, it just hits me sometimes and its mainly during the evening time and when I am aseelp. I am tired of thinking I am dying!! Cus it sure feels like it sometimes.. I know when I go to the ER, they tell me the same thing..YOU ARE OKAY.. but I just want answers and I hope to get them when I go to the Neurologist... I actually talked to the doctor last Thursday and he changed my meds to a nerve pain pill the treats seizures.. Its called GABAPENTIN and I have now been taking that for 5 days now and it seems to be helping A LOT!!! So we shall see....

So still no answers. I just had a breast ultrasound and everything came back fine!! .. I am glad but I just wish I could be given an answer!! The past few days, I have had this weird feeling of burning sensation in my upper left breast/chest side and through my whole left arm. It is such a weird feeling. Its like drinking a cup of hot tea and its going through my left chest and down my left arm. Its so weird. Plus i feel off balance and dizzy for the past week now!! GGGRRRR. I just dont know what to think! The neurologist appt seems so far away!! :( I dont know if i can wait that long!!

Amber, I am sure you have but have they done full and detailed blood work on you recently?
Please keep us posted.
You might want to reserach a naturopath Doctor-they work with tradition medicine but sometimes they think outside the box and work with people that Dr's fail to really help. A friend has a Daughter that got Lymes so badly she missed most of her high school years and they finally took her to a local Dr who practices naturopathic medicine and he has managed to get her healthy and now she is starting to function again.
Hugs...

Thanks for the advice! I def will look further into things.

So heres the latest... I was in so much pain last week that I called for another doctor appt with a different doctor in the practice. They know I had surgery and they felt as if it once again its nerve related. So they referred me to a nerve specialist and I now have to get an EMG (?) test done.. Not really sure what this means. I just know or think they said its to see if theres nerve damage. So that appt is not until Jan 7th. I also called my gastric bypass doctor and gave her all my symptoms and she doesnt think its any issues from the surgery.. Hhmmpp!! (I guess its a good thing) but I just dont know how to feel about it. She doesnt think its too serious to me at this point but she did schedule an appt for feb 1!!! I am just getting the run around and the medical bills are starting to pile up!! So I guess i have to wait for this friday to see what the Neurologist says.. I am starting to feel helpless and this is getting really old. its depressing! :(
