Alrighty! Hello everyone! I was just approved last week, and I have been scheduled for March 1!!

I am a full time student, and I work part time as a pharmacy tech for a huge company that has an HR department. Unfortunately, I've only been there 3 months, and I do not qualify for FMLA. Since I want to go to pharmacy school, this job is CRITICAL in keeping that dream alive.

I am going to tell my boss this week, having documentation in hand all ready for them so she can give me an answer immediately.

Do I tell her what kind of surgery? I was thinking of telling my immediate supervisor in the pharmacy, but only giving HR the bare minimum information. When I had my gallbladder out a year and a half ago, I returned to work in two weeks, but I was not in school at the time (summer). I'll have to return to school in two weeks, for midterms and such. I'm already planning the surgery for the week before spring break so I won't miss too much school.

I'm just worried about getting let go.

Any help is appreciated!

You don't have to tell them what kind of surgery you are having, if you are afraid you will get fired I wouldn't tell them because a lot of people don't understand why people need GBS.  They think its the easy way out etc.  Good luck I hope that you don't lose your job.  If you are only out for 2 weeks that's really not that long.

I would most definitely NOT tell them what kind of surgery -- they have no need to know, and it may colour their response in ways you can't predict or manage. You are well-justified in taking off work for this medically indicated surgery, and you don't need crap about it -- or to lose your crucial job over it!!  So keep it all on the DL and just be nonspecific but serious about your need for some medical treatment that will keep you out of work for X weeks.  Good luck!!
