First Day After Surgery, Dry Mouth?

9 posts in this topic

I was told that for the first 24 hours after surgery that I can not have any kind of liquid. No ice chips, no brushing teeth, nothing that I might accidently swallow. The nutritionist told me that a persons mouth tends to get very dry. I know that I can bring lip balm for dry lips. Any suggestions on how to combat dry mouth on day one?

Mine is the same way... They however are allowing a little mouth swab thingy... its a green spounge on the end of a stick thats got some h2O on it. but not too much.. just to wet the mouth. :) see if they have that!

They told me no but did suggest those listerine plastic breath thingies that dissolve. They said that can create syliva. Im just worried they would be to strong for me. I appreciate the suggestion!

I could't have any thing either. All I got was cotton swabs that were lemon flavored. I sucked the juice out of them. It helped a little bit but it was much better the next day when I could have my ice cubes but I only got 1 oz of ice cubes per hour. You will survive it! I thought it would be more unbearable than it really was. You're so out of it from the anesthesia you mostly sleep that day anyways.

I had the sponge on a stick thing which was okay as long as i would do it every few minutes. I'm on the second day now and allowed to drink but afraid to drink too much, and not really liking the experience so it's hard.

They gave me the lemony damp mega-qtips, too. They didn't really help so I stopped bothering with them. All they did was make my dry mouth turn all sticky. As it was, the dry mouth really asnt so bad, really.

I was worried about this, too. I got to use the little sponge-on-a-stick a few times, but I was honestly in and out of it so much, and more worried about pushing my morphine button. Luckily that whole phase was over before I knew it.
