Anyone heard of Planet Fitness?

13 posts in this topic

Has anybody heard of Planet Fitness??? We have one opening up in May. They are pre-selling memberships. It sounds to good to be true. No commitment, $10 a month, or they have a 19.99 one that includes unlimited tanning and use of their massage chairs. I was just wondering if any of you heard of this.

There's one very close to my house. A lot of people go there and love it. It has a different atmosphere than most gyms, very female oriented and very reasonably priced. The only reason I don't go there is because I get a similar deal from the gym I already belonged to when that one opened (and I have a small philosophical issue with a gym that keeps tootsie rolls on the counter and has bagel and pizza days, but that's personal).

That is the gym I belong too and I love it. It is a gym for everyone - at least the one I belong to - all ages, men & women, all different shapes and sizes. They don’t offer any classes but they have treadmills, elliptical, stair climbers, bikes and all different weight machines and free weights.

You need to check if you're going to be locked into a 1 year contract.

It seems that there has been an issue with members trying to cancel their membership and having to pay for the priviledge. Being a franchise operation, it's worth Googling for all things Planet Fitness related (particiularly your local gym) before commiting yourself.

But that applies to all gym's requiring an annual membership subscription.

I am a member and really Love it! You get all shapes sizes and ages and its truly a no judgement zone. They have alot of equipment so you don't have to wait for machines. You won't be disappointed.

I'm a member also. I love it so far. There's no classes or anything but you don't feel uncomfortable when your there like at some gyms. It's not intimidating at all.

My wife and I just signed up - in what we pay in a year there, we were paying in 7 mos. at the local YMCA - yeah, they don't have a pool or classes, but I really didn't utilize them in the 3 years I was a member there anyway.

They tell you right off the bat it is a "no judgement zone" meaning that they don't want people in there just lifting weights and flexing because that frankly is a bit intimidating to new members and causes them to not come back. They try to cater to the new gym person and offer free training sessions...which is a very nice perk.

They have treadmills, ellipticals, small amount of barbells, dumbbells, specific muscle group machines, universal machines and a circuit workout routine that they compare to Curves (30 minute - best workout you can get in that short of a time they claim).

No slamming of weights is allowed.

I opted for the "black" plan which is $19.99/mo, the sign-up fee was pro-rated and I paid $11.99 and then in June, I owe them another $40 to lock in the rate for the next year. If I cancel, it is $58. The "black" plan does come with unlimited tanning, unlimited message chairs (think what you see in a mall or on a cruise ship (Carnival)) and 1/2 priced cooler drinks (water, Gatorade) along with 10 visits to other clubs per month and unlimited guest privileges.

Seemed good to me compared to Bally's or something else that tried to get you in for 2-3 yrs and costs an arm and a leg to begin with.

I've had a membership there before. They're very conscious of making people comfortable working out. It's not the place for burly dudes grunting and lifting mega amounts of weights. They actually have a buzzer that they sound if you're grunting or you drop weights. I personally didn't enjoy the place. However, it was cheap. They don't have any aerobics classes or anything. Just a few dozen machines and some tanning beds. It's all according to what you want out of a gym. For some folks -- it's a perfect match.

LOL - my gym did the same thing! during Christmas we had a lot of Christmas candy and cookies on the tables they have around the gym for people to take a break.. i was always wondering how could they put the temptation around after we worked so hard to burn the calories! I told one of my trainers and ever since they've only had dried fruits and nuts :P
