Hi Amy2822 and Fire Wife....don't kno if you still go onto this site but your deffinately not alone. I had RNY 3 years ago and ever since I have felt myself jus slipping away! I lost 100 pounds in 6 months and i too have had all those problems u mentioned and more...I too was seeing specialists at UCSF and many other local drs. Everyone but my primary has given up on me. To this day I have not worked in over 2 years now and fell into a severe depression. I'm constantly on pain medication and the last 6 months have jus been treating pain and other symptoms, they have stopped trying to figure me out... I finally got approved for a reversal and will be goin into surgery in 9 days and I'm jus hoping my pains and other symptoms go away..from what I hear I'm not getting my hopes up! Hope things are well for u now and if u need someone to talk to my email is: [email protected]

Hi everyone, my name is Cheryl, I had gastric bypass in May 2010 and have had nothing but problems. I don't throw up anymore. I'm very constipated. I'm 5'9 and my highest weight before surgery was 286. My lowest weight has been 124. Was put in hospital in 2011 to have a g-tube put in. Still have g-tube in now. I went up in weight to 135 but then went back down to 124 this past Aug. was put in hospital with diherria for 15 days. They said I had chronic pancreitis and have put me on Creon with each meal and snacks. I eat a normal size gastric bypass meal and very healthy but still lose weight. Just had major back surgery this March 2012 for a 360 or three disks to be fused. It did not work so now live in constant pain from that. Then was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Chronic pain syndrome. Now I'm on feeding tube 24/7, use to only be on it at night for 12 hours. They have talked about reversal surgery but I have heard horror stories of complication from it. Also having problems with low blood counts. Plates are at 83 have gone as low as 56 WBC stays between 1.7 to 3.0 and RBC is also low. So surgery is risky. Had to have transfusion with back surgery and platelets were higher than at 125 so now worried about any surgery. Just getting small cuts I bleed like crazy. They have done a bone marrow biopsy and everything was fine. So they can't figure out what is causing low blood counts. I have had three weight loss doctors and they have all given up on me. Have also had three gastroenterologist that have given up on me. I have had three different hematologist/oncologist looking at blood work they all agree with my doctor there is not much they can do about low blood counts. My hematologist just watches me and takes blood every few months and will redo bone marrow biopsy in a year. Back to reversal just not sure what to do. Doctors said go online and figure it out. I'm not trained as a doctor, I thought that's why we paid for health insurance and paid a lot when we go see the doctor so they could figure it out. My insurance won't allow me to go to the teaching hospitals here in the Dallas TX. Area. So I have to put up with doctors that just want to do weight loss surgeries but don't want to deal with the problems it can cause afterwards. If anyone can help or give advice I would be so thankful. For those that have had reversal do you have any complications from it now? Have you gained all your weight back? Thanks so much, Cheryl. You can email at [email protected]

I just want to say, I am so upset to read this thread.

I am sending hugs to all for a full recovery.

I have in the past lived with horrendous debilitating pain and I know that you can feel that death is the only relief.

I am quite disturbed that in nearly everyone of these cases here and others that have posted here in the past three years the Surgeons run tests, place feeding tubes and then throw up their hands. Very disturbing...

Amy2822 My husband was able to come home May 1st without the feeding tube. He had his 2 week check up at hasnt gained any weight but didnt lose any either. They were able to get some pain control by using 50mcg fentanyl patches 1 every 3 days along with percocets 10/650, Merinol for nausea. He also takes Lexapro for depression and all of his vitamins. His GI doctor suggested he go to www.canadadrugsonline.com

Domperidone (Motilium) 10mg every 6hrs

we are willing to try anything. Our Doctor did have to fax over a prescription even though the medication is not approved for sale in the USA he was able to write the script and we were able to get it. It will be here in 2 weeks. Some other alternative options. My husband is against taking drugs and is really upset that he is on so many pain meds. He had a family member turn him onto obtaining a 215 card here in California and since he has a hard time smoking he is able to use the nebulizer. He now has more control of his pain and can sleep through the night without having to take any pain meds. Like I said we are desperate! We still have no answer to what happened. I have sought out an opinion from a surgeon who does reversals and he seems to think that my husband is not a good candidate for a reversal. He actually said he wouldnt do a reversal on anyone unless they were a year past the surgery date. Now I will tell you he does suffer from full body twitching. Almost like when you fall asleep and you wake up because you were dreaming you were falling... that is what he looks like. We are told that is due to the lack of exercise and fluid intake. Its easy for me to say eat more, drink more and exercise. BUT VERY HARD FOR HIM TO ACTUALLY DO. I do have him on a high protein/calorie diet making him smoothies with greek yogurt, mixed berries, V8splash(berry fusion) and a scoop of whey protein,. Now he can usually drink 2-3 smoothies a day and get in 2 glasses of apple juice along with eating a yogurt or 1c of cottage cheese. We are averaging about 700-1200 calories per day. The doctor just said that he thinks we are on the corner of this but not on the other side, My worry is the pain is all controlled by medicine so to me its all a cover up. I guess in theory is he will gain weight and symptoms will go away, He has to push himself everyday! I have not given up on him and I always journal his food and fluid intake to show the doctors. His sister works for a GI doctor who is doing her own research and that doctor actually wants to see my husband and wants us to release all medical records to him. AGAIN if your looking for answers you will do anything and if your looking for the pain to stop or be within a managible range then you will do or try anything.

Fire wife, is your husband getting his vitamin b12 injections as well as B1 vitamins in? also the motilium that is mainly used when GP patients have had their vagus nerves damaged through surgery the somach muscles no longer work to move the food through the pouch hence the vomiting and stomach pains also he culd be backed up also (no BM motions due to intestinal imobility again due to vagus nuerve damage) the other thing have they ruled out intestinal obstuction?

I do hope that he is better and is able to keep the food and drinks down and is having no pain.

Much Regards M

Cherylene, I'm not sure about your situation but as far as the bleeding is concerned it sounds like you are vitamin K2 deficiant http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/supplement-guide-vitamin-k so maybe if you got some from vitalady.com it would help with the bleeding issue.

Hope this helps, Regards M

I too am having the same side effects as you but my surgery was back in 2006 and they didn't surface til 2 yrs ago. The only time I felt great was I was admitted to the hospital and given blood and hooked up to TPN bags for my nutrients. Your still in the early stages of the surgery and I think trying to stick it out would be best for you, like growing pains. My side effects didn't start surfacing til years later.

Hi there, I am in need of some serious information from someone who has had gastric bypass then had it reversed. In particular, I am looking for someone who had it reversed because of severe nausea/vomiting. I need to know if after the reversal the nausea went away and if there are still vitamin deficiency issues with it.

I have done everything to make this nausea/vomiting better. 2 Endoscopies, ct scans, Fenzian treatments, nausea medicines, and I will be trying acupuncture this coming week. I am down over 70 pounds in a little over 2 months and am 17 pounds away from my goal. I can only keep liquids down and when I try to move up to things like applesauce they come back up and I have pain. The nausea is 24 hours a day with dry heaves the worst in the morning. So far the only blood work that is down is Thiamin and Potassium. I got my Potassium up a little by drinking gatorade and they just gave me a Thiamin drip at my Endoscopy today. But I am worried that things will only get worse since I can't keep things down and am eating so little. I am still trying to work through this nausea, but this is really no way to live and if I keep loosing weight at this rate it will become very dangerous as well as the health risks of me not getting the nutrients I need. So if anyone has had the reversal or knows of someone that has, I would love to hear from them.

Thanks for reading my story.

it  took me a good 6 months or so to STOP the nausea and I was back to being able to eat lean meats, veggies and fruit . I will forever me grateful  to the surgeon who agreed to perform my reversal. they are hard to come by.

whileI'll never be the same, my reversal gave me back much of my health that I lost with the rny.

 you're not alone

I joined this site for my husband who is in the hospital at this time with unknown diagnosis due to the after effects of gastric bypass. I am searching for answers since what he is going through is so rare. He had surgery in Sept 2011 he weighed 313 morning of surgery his high weight was 338 in Aug. He weighed 180 April 04, 2012 and after a 15 day stay in the hospital and being on fluids and nutrition through a PICC line they say he has gained 17 pounds back. They also said some of those 17lbs could be difference in scale from Dr. Office to hospital and rehydration. He has been hospitalized 2x first one in Dec 2011 for 10 days and was sent home with a “J” feeding tube. It was removed 1 month later. Another inserted in Feb and he currently receives nutritional feedings through the tube. There is such a long story to all of this and will answer any questions as I have a tone of questions as I am looking for someone who has experienced the same symptoms and what their outcome was. Long story short, he went into the hospital after 3 bariatric surgeons and 1 gastroenterologist agreed that a Roux EnY reversal needed to be done and that his body was rejecting the surgery. They now have changed their mind in doing the reversal, symptoms are still very much there and other tests have been issued and come back normal which ruled out SMA and MALS and now they are talking about sending him home. He has been out of work since Nov 28 and we are looking at his work having to replace his position if not able to return back in 2 months. That also cancels out his insurance. I need help! He is currently at UCSF in San Francisco which is a teaching hospital and he feels like they are giving up on him and he is being sent home to die… HELP ME HELP HIM!

SYMPTOMS-

-constant abdominal pain since surgery which has gotten worse through time ranging from a 5-10 never going pain free(September – November pain was present but ranged from 2-4 on pain scale) now is more from 8-10 on pain scale never getting full relief, RAPID WEIGHT LOSS (158lb weight loss in 8months which most occurred from Nov-Feb), nausea, vomiting, wrenching, dehydration, less frequent BMs, gas buildup, gastro intestinal noises compared to “thunder storms” (started after tube feeds)which tube feeds were done through a long 12hr period of time then tried doing bolus feeds, DEPRESSION, never graduated from soft “creamy” foods, weakness, muscle loss, dizziness, falling due to balance, slow healing, hair thinning, slow facial and hair growth, MOOD SWINGS, short tempered…

TESTS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE-

3 BARIUM X-RAYS, 5 CT SCANS, 1 SONOGRAM, 2 ENDOSCOPIES, 2 EGD’s , 1 LAP ABDOMINAL SCOPE, ADHESION CLEAN UP, 2 “J” TUBE FEEDS, PICC LINE, BLOOD TESTS.

DOCTORS INVOLVED-

3 BARIATRIC DOCTORS, team of 7 student doctors, GASTROENTEROLOGIST, VASCULAR SURGEON.

I know its been over 2 years since your post but Iwas wondering how your husband has been/ better I hope.

I had my rny reversed for many of the similar reasons. went thru 11 doctors till I found someone willing to reverse/takedown my rny. BEST thing I could havedone. while I will never be the same since my rny, having a reversal has given me back much of my health and I can now participate in life again.

I'm here if you ever wanna chat

Still looking for someone who has had a reversal/revision to their gastric bypass. I appreciate the couple of people who responded. Unfortunately, this isn't a case of just a little nausea. I have undergone 3 endoscopies now with a stricture each time. I am now down 80 pounds in a little over 3 months which comes down to around 25 pounds a month. If this continues I will be under 100 pounds in 2 months. I have been trying everything to be able to eat solid foods including acupuncture. I have been deficient in Potassium and Thiamine and have been given Thiamine drips. I try to take my vitamins and eat, but most of the time it comes right back up... and sometimes its very painful. And no its not because I am eating wrong foods. I mainly eat soup broths with a few noodles or mushy potatoes. I have not given up on the surgery... yet, but I like to be informed. If by the end of this month, I am still loosing almost a pound a day I will need to seriously think about reversal/revision. That's why I want to find someone who has had this done. So I can ask some questions so I am informed. It's a stupid person who waits til too late to ask the questions. Unfortunately, it appears anyone who has had this done stops coming to these forums and I have tried searching other sites for answers too.

to obchargegirl - I am so sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I hope they can find a way to help you, but with what I have been through with Dr.s I suggest you make sure you get second and even third opinions. If it wasn't for a nurse advocate that is a friend of my sisters, I would still be vomitting 24 hours a day. My surgeon didn't think I needed an Endoscopy and it turns out I did. So don't be afraid to go elsewhere for advice. Good luck.

I know this is an old  post and I hope since then that you've found some help.

I had my rny reversed and it was THE best thing that I could have done. you MAY have read some of my old posts under this user name or my old one onastartrek. I tried to get back on my old user name but have been unsuccessful. I hope you're feeling better. if you wanna chat please feel free to email me

I know this thread is old, but I recommend everyone get their eyes on their test results! Do not trust them to just be read to you and then filed away. I have learned that a surgeon made up test results to try and hide the fact that my surgery wasn't performed properly. He also never documented the actual complaints of nausea and vomiting that I told them about, every time I was there. You must read your reports by either getting copies, or now setting up an online access that some facilities are now offering. That is how I found the deception that I have been put through.

Not sure if anyone ever answered you; but I had a roux en y in may of 2013 and after 9 post op surgeries and 2 feeding tubes, I had to have the bypass reversed. Almost four years later and I still suffer from nausea, vomiting, vitamin deficiencies and debilitating stomach cramps and gastro paresis. The only thing I have been able to do to alleviate pain is maintain a plant based diet, eat small portions and get regular vitamin infusions. As difficult as it is to live this reality, it offers a level higher than having to live of a feeding tube for the rest of my life. I wish I had a better answer for you, but I've yet to find a bariatric doctor with an answer. I've had three.
