Meeting the Surgeon tomorrow - got Questions

Recommended Posts

I have heard a lot about the Vertical Sleeve procedure but I am well down the path with talking to doctors about Gastric Bypass...........anyone out there take a long hard look at the differences and make a choice?

Hi Mike, we are both from Nh, so if you need support-def reach out. I have done some research on the two...and my hospital does not perform the sleeve, plus my insurance does not cover it...so I am having gastric bypass in a couple weeks.

I believe the main difference is that gastric bypass restricts volume as well as having a malabsorptive effect since it bypasses part of the small intestine. The gastric sleeve restricts volume but does not have the malabsorptive aspect to it.

Im sure its a decision you need to weigh for yourself. Eventhough its been done for a few years now, my insurance still considers the gastric sleeve experimental and that is why they don't cover it.

Goodluck and let us know how it goes!

Hi NH Mike -- I went into my consultations sold on GBS and ended up opting for the sleeve. It looked very "elegant" and didn't seem like a major replumbing job. However, it is still considered experimental so not all insurance covers it and it is not as widely known as GBS. Also, weight loss is slower (I understand) but at two years evens out (I understand) with GBS.

However, if I had diabetes or was pre-diabetic I would definitely have gone with GBS. Also, if I had much more than 100 to lose I would have also gone with GBS. Plus, my surgery isn't until Dec 15 so I may still change my mind!

Main thing, is everyone is different and your doc will be able to look at all of your co-morbidities and help you assess which surgery is best for your facts and circumstances.

Good luck! I am very excited at my future good health and my heart is looking forward to a much thinner me.

Andrea
