Hi,
I'm confused. I seem to see these used interchangeably and I really want to make sure I understand.
Please explain!!:o

Laproscopic is a form of procedure for Roux-En-Y gastric bypass surgery.
The bypass itself has several forms. Roux-En-Y, Sleeve, Banding, and a couple others I can't remember the exact terms of off the top of my head right now, but I'm sure others will fill in.
Most of these procedures may be done via laproscopicly (tools and scopes inserted via small incisions), open surgery, or orally for one of the new proceedures.

Thanks for the response! I'm seriously looking at the Roux-En-Y but am self pay and since I see the two terms used I'm concerned I could get 'tricked' into the wrong surgery for me!
Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.

The sleeve and band are not bypasses as they do not bypass your intestine.
Gastric bypass is the Roux-en-y otherwise known as RNY for short. This is where your stomach is cut, made into a small pouch, and your intestine is rerouted to actually 'bypass' part of it so you have malabsorbtion.
Banding just puts a medical grade device around your stomach, making it so you can't eat as much. The sleeve removes part of your stomach, and makes it more like a small tube- no pouch and no part of your intestine is removed or bypassed for both the band & sleeve.

So, does this mean, if I see "gastric bypass" I can assume they are talking about the Roux-En-Y procedure?

Thanks everyone for clearing this up for me! Now, to just find an affordable, trustworthy surgeon overseas..

Roux is the doc its named after and the "Y" comes from how the stomach and intestines appear after the surgery. In a y shape.

Where the Laparoscopic term comes in:
When you consider the way they will do the RNY/gastric bypass surgery, they usually offer two ways: Laparoscopic or Open. Laparoscopic is the several tiny incisions that they work through to do the surgery, while Open is where they open up your whole stomach to do the surgery in one long incision.
So people either have open gastric bypass surgery or laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. Lap is usually less recovery time, etc. and seems to be more popular these days.
Sorry, I just noticed Mel sort of explained this already.

Thanks so much for the comments.
I understand now. I knew I wanted the Lap. Roux-En-Y but was concerned when researching since many just refer to it as gastric bypass..I just want to make sure I get the right one for me! Since I'm self pay and need to do it overseas (due to cost), I just want to feel 100% positive I'm getting what I'm paying for!
