Much to my dismay, I seem to have become lactose intolerant. If I drink regular skim milk, I get violent stomach cramps, and diarrhea...it lasts for hours at a time, and makes me pray for a quick death.
So, I decided to buy some of that Lactaid milk, which is made for lactose intolerant people. Imagine my surprise when I still got sick after drinking it...although it was about 40-50% intensity of the previous sickness. I've tried it 3 times, and it's made me sick each time. Obviously, the 4th time isn't gonna happen!
If the lactose is removed from the Lactaid milk, why am I still getting sick? I bought the fat free version, so it couldn't be from the fat. Does anyone else have this problem with Lactaid milk, or am I just a freak of nature? ;)
Also, will I be lactose intolerant forever, or is this something that I'll eventually "outgrow" as I'm further out?
Thanks! :)

Sherry...did you try any of the Soy Milks? Like Silk?
The people I know that are lactose intolerant are all over the map...some (like Whit-Coptergirl) can have cheese and some other dairy products, just not milk specifically, others are very sensitive and most likely will be forever.
Does the NON Fat dry milk powder have the lactose in it the way milk does?
Sorry I'm not much help...I hope you're able to find something suitable!

Hi Mike, I bought a box of soy milk yesterday, but I haven't tried it out yet. My son was on soy formula when he was a baby, and I still have bad memories of the taste of that nasty baby formula. Ick!
I had a hard time finding a soy milk that didn't have sugar in it. I finally found one that is boxed (not refridgerated in the store...just after opening). It is sweetened with Splenda. Even the non-flavored varieties had sugar in them. What's up with that?
I'm not sure about the dry milk powder. I have some of it, but I tossed the box, and put it in a plastic container.
I did find a brand of cheese that is lactose free. The Cabot 50% cheeses have it printed on the label, although it's a bit hard to see. I have eaten Queso Blanco, which presumably has lactose, and it didn't bother me. But the last time I had Fage yogurt, I got sick. Go figure.

That Cabot cheese is good...I can't tell the difference between it and regular. I have some in the fridge now!

I just had to put my two bits in and make mention that I was a milk drinker before and after surgery. But just recently (like a month back) I can't tolerate milk, and if I have a little ice cream - I have regrets.
I love cheese, and I can still eat and tolerate that - but sure miss my milk. I will be trying Soymilk when it drops in price. I refuse to pay 5.00 for 1/2 gallon of milk. Insane!!
My lactose intolerance took time to hit me - it was not an immediate thing, but I will survive! :D

I am the same. I can eat cheese like nobody's business, and I LOVE it!! But let me try a little milk and OOOOOOOOOOOOH lord it's on. Even 1% or skim milk it's just doesn't work for me. I have tried the soy milk and it's not bad. I'm over 4 years out and milk is still a no no for me. :(

Hi Sherry,
I had the same experience but, am able to drink "Silk". I have even slipped it into my cooking and the family has no idea. Plus, with all the flavors they have of it now you can find one for everything. If you can get a little carton of it (like the school lunch size) at like a 7-11 I would do that first. But, don't use the vanilla flavored one in like mac and cheese....it's pretty nasty.

Hi Sherry,
I think I am lactose intolerant, as well. For a while after surgery I couldn't drink milk at all - the taste didn't appeal to me. Now, I am back to liking the taste, but drinking it KILLS ME (and gives me the potential to kill others too, if you know what I mean.) I finally realized what was causing the gas and switched to light soy milk (it has less fat and less sugar, too) and I haven't had any problems. Strangely, I only get the gas pains and diahrea with milk and ice cream but no other dairy products. Not sure what that's about. I miss the milk, but I definitely do not miss the after effects. I don't know if it will last forever or not, but it seems to be pretty common. At any rate, I am willing to trade the milk for skinny jeans, any day! HA.

Jersey, does the Silk have added sugar? It's been awhile since I read the labels, and I can't remember if that one had it.
I've been using the Westsoy unsweetened soy milk. It comes in a shelf-stable box, and it doesn't have to be refrigerated until after it's opened. It comes in chocolate too (sweetened with Splenda), which is pretty decent tasting.
Oh, and have you seen the Soy ice cream? It still has a crap load of sugar in it though.

Sherry, YOU can imagine the surprise I had when that blessed day came along after surgery, when I got the green light for milk, so I paddle my then large ass down to the store, buy a carton of NON fat milk, come home, get the cleanest glass, glass I could get, pour up a big one, down it, in small sips, and a half hour later, yep....bam!!!!a real fricken mess, violent stomach etc, exactly as you described.
So I talk to some of the girls I had class with, they are a wealth of knowledge, they say congrats, your lactose intolerant!! HOO RAY!!!
They told me to try it again in a month or so, well after the results of the first meeting, i dont care to go through that again.
NOW for the alternatives..the lactose free was not an option, taste like crap... the soy milk is the answer, but yes you must get the vanilla flavor, I dont know who the first guy was that squeezed some soy beans into liquid, drank it and said...now that tastes great!! Cause it doesnt!! Tastes like crap. Dont waste your time. That said, yo can add some splenda to the plain, and its pretty good stuff, I use the Harvest brand, organic vanilla flavored, 7b grams sugar, which is on the high end of my sugar level, and 7 grams of protein.
Its kind of wierd, I dont have a problem with cheese.
