pyloric sphincter after LGS

3 posts in this topic

Technical question: what happens to the pyloric sphincter following LGS?  Is it left intact?  Is it still functional as a valve between the stomach and the duodenum?

In a sleeve gastrectomy the pyloric valve is left intact and functional. Thats why GERD is such a common complication with sleeve gastrectomy. The bypassing of the pyloric valve by gastric bypass surgery is why GERD is resolved by that procedure.

Thanks for the info.  I never thought about my pyloric valve pre-op.  Now it seems like an important topic I should know more about.  Razum
