Thumbs up Walk from Obesity 2005

For those of you interested in participating in the Walk from Obesity 2005, it will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2005. Registration is at 7:00 a.m. and the walk starts at 8:00 a.m. at DeAnza Cove. Melanie, Melanie's husband and I will be walking this year.

As I remember, the course is 3.3 miles, all on level ground. It is a fundraiser organized by the ASBS Foundation to raise awareness of morbid obesity and bariatric surgery. The registration is $25.00 per person, which includes an event T-shirt. There were lots of prizes given away at a raffle last year.

A little background...In 1997, members of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the largest society for bariatric surgery in the world, formed the ASBS Foundation; a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising public and professional awareness about severe obesity and bariatric surgery through education and obesity research and to support physician and allied health research and public health projects.

I felt it was a very worthwhile event last year and I'm looking forward to this year's walk. If you want to participate, the link for information and to register is below:

I have also posted this on the thread from last year's walk.

I am going to talk to my husband and see if he wants to do the walk with me. It sounds like fun. I did the Arthritis walk last weekend it was fun.

Duh-oh! Too late to get T-shirts that says "Staplers Rock". Wasn't there a bit of a protest last year from those against surgery?

Dara do you know how long the walk usually lasts?? It sounds like it would be cool to do. Bridget do you jog often, I want to start jogging I would try and jog it with you if I am able to make it.

Ok we went my husband and I and a friend. It was kind of small turn out maybe 50 people total.

I would like to do some of the bigger walks. Could you guys let me know when some of the bigger walks are coming up so that I can sign up for them.

We had a great time. Our dogs loved walking.

Dara if you were their we were the couple with a Rotweiler and a chiwahwa spelling bad.

Barb:

We were there too! Darn...I didn't recognize you! I even remember petting your Rottweiler...your husband was walking him, huh? I remember seeing the
Chihuahua, but I just didn't recognize your face! I wish you could have recognized me and said hello! I was one of the people wearing the paper on my back dedicated to John Ott. I was wearing long black walking pants and a white long-sleeved t-shirt top. (I thought it would be really foggy and kinda cold.)

There was a lot smaller turnout this year than last year. Last year, they had some sponsor vendors there and they raffled a lot of prizes away. They didn't even have a sign posted this year. Craig Wittgrove, the organizer, said the sign they ordered was coming from Mississippi. Ooops...they're a little behind there!

Oh well, next year, Barb!

Dr. Wittgrove is the one that did my mom's surgery 20 years ago (if it's the same Wittgrove I'm thinking of) and his wife delivered my daughter. I would have liked to have gone. Next year definately.
