Default Celiac or Crohns Disease

Does anyone here that has had WLS have Celiac or Crohns Disease? I am being tested the end of the month to see if I have one of these (I have an unknown abdominal pain). Can you still have WLS if you have any of these diseases?

I don't know why you couldn't. However, if you do have celiac, I would think it be extremely important to avoid all gluten and to make sure you take all your supplements after WLS. In people with celiac, eating gluten (even small amounts) actually damages the small intestine. It damages the villi that absorb vitamins and minerals so nutritional deficiencies are common. Since we have malabsorption after RNY, it seems like it would be especially important to avoid any further damage to the intestine.

Oh, but I'm not sure which surgery you're having. Celiac might actually be a good reason to consider the sleeve, to avoid the malabsorption problems.

I don't know about Crohn's disease and WLS, but from what I do know (my sister had it) it causes ulcers in the large intestine, correct?

Sometimes they end up doing surgery to correct it or ease the pain at least.

It's pretty complex and as far as I know Crohn's has other symptoms. You'd probably be best off to wait and see what it is (maybe it's nothing) and then to venture forward from there with your doctors.

Good luck - I hope it turns out to be nothing.
