Pcos
Now get my head straight here, is being fat or becoming overweight the cause for PCOS or does PCOS cause you to become overweight?
Im confused!!!

You can have PCOS whether you are big or small. PCOS causes weight gain, but can be controlled through a low carb diet and WLS. Not everyone who has PCOS has fertility problems, but a lot of women with it do. I have PCOS...but, through WLS, it is controlled a lot better.

"The causes of polycystic ovarian syndrome are unknown. Even though there is no definite link to describe the condition as genetic, sometimes women that have the condition find out that other people in their family also suffer from the condition. Many women that have PCOS are overweight and researchers continue to look into the relationship of PCOS and the inability to make insulin. Because some women with PCOS make too much insulin, it is a possibility that the ovaries react and make male hormones. Acne, excessive hair growth, weight gain and ovulation problems can all be linked to this. "
"Women that experience PCOS are likely to be infertile and are unable to get pregnant because they do not ovulate. Other symptoms of the condition are weight gain or obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, skin tags, thinning hair and sleep apnea/snoring."

I totally agree with Kelly. PCOS does not effect everyone in the same way. I was diagnosed with it when I was a teenager. I have struggled with my weight all my life. I wish I could totally blame the PCOS, but I can't. Hmmm...I wonder if that would work?

From the what I understood in talking with my dr. there are different forms of PCOS. The one I have is insulin resistant and this is most common in women who have PCOS and are overweight. The way he put it was its like the chicken or the egg...it doesn't really matter, the issue is I have PCOS and its attacking my body in many different ways. He did clarify that being overweight cannot cause you to get PCOS, however, PCOS can cause you to be overweight but it's not always black and white...
my OBGYN suggested WLS, and believes it will drastically change me life...I hope he's right

I will tell you that WLS has helped my PCOS. I still have some facial hair problems and the occasional acne, but I've been pretty regular with my periods which has been a blessing!

It is my understanding that they are related, but I have heard it is a chicken and egg thing.
I can tell you that although I never suffered from PCOS, losing weight has changed my cycle...which was always pretty regular...to 28 days (instead of 32) and made my actual period shorter.
It's interesting.

Interesting.... I think I developed PCOS because I am overweight not the other way around! Since my wls I have had one period that was normal flow and lasted only 3 days!! It was amazing and almost enough to make wls worth it to me!!!

see I was curious, because if person at one time is small and able to conceive twice, and then gains a lot of weight and now finds out they have PCOS so makes me wonder if gaining the weight and being overweight has caused the PCOS?

The person may have always had it, but it was controlled when the weight was off. Maybe gaining the weight triggered the problems. I'm not an expert, but it's a thought.
