OT: San Diego Trip Planning
This is way off-topic, but I wanted to seek some travel/tourist advice. My wife and I will are going to San Diego next month with a couple of friends (newlyweds) for nearly 4 days.
So I thought I'd ask around for some suggestions for things to see/do while there. I've been to San Diego before and want to revisit Mt. Soledad and/or Cabrillo Nat'l Monument. And I'm really looking forward to doing some clothes shopping in Horton Plaza and Seaport Village - a definite new opportunity for me!! I'm hoping to get to stroll around down around the La Jolla cove area and maybe show our guests around over at Hotel Del. But are there other things that we should add to our agenda?
One thing I'd really like to do is get my feet wet as soon as possible. So, where would be the closest sandy beach from the airport?
I'd sure appreciate some suggestions!
Rob

The closest beach would be Mission Beach. I like Coronado by the Del and alos La Jolla Shores. If you want to do a wine tour Temecula has some nice wineries. And of course there are the ususal places, Aoo, Seaworld Wild Animal Park.

My sugestion would be to drive straight to Coronado. You can go to the city beach or down through Hotel Del's, You could also drive down the Silver Strand and go to the State beach. Then you can go over to Ferry Landing (on the Bay) and have any type of Food you want!

Coronado is my personal favorite--for some reason the sand sparkles golden there. Maybe the people who live on that magical island all contribute to make the sand so lovely.
Downtown has been spiffing up their image (with the ball park and all) to make for a better dining experience, and there is a winery right on the way to the wild animal park.

Thanks for the tips! I agree that the sand on Coronado does seem different - prettier.
As far as the wineries go, either I'm just being too literal or maybe my doc is just stricter than some, but we were told that alchohol post-op was a no-no and cautioned about just how hard a very small amount can hit you. So, the only time I've touched a drop was a sip of champagne during a wedding reception toast recently. I was never much of a drinker anyway, but I've really stayed on the straight & narrow about this since surgery - partly 'cuz I'm a big chicken about dumping and also 'cuz I didn't wanna make a complete fool of myself in a social setting.
So, am I overblowing the effects of post-op alchohol consumption? Is it not nearly as extreme as my doc made it out to be?

What to do
You should go down to the Gas Lamp District, and walk around. That's down by Horton Plaza. There is lots of things to do down there. Pleanty of places to eat, and if you like to dance there are LOTS of places to do that down there. Even if you don't like to dance it's fun to go there and people watch.

If you want to do some serious shopping, hit the Viejas Outlet Center. About 40 minutes East of San Diego on I-8. Lots of good stores, plus the Casino across the street.

Fun Stuff
I also love Old Town as well. You can go to the Whaley House which is featured on the Travel Channel as the #1 Haunted House in America. My Husband and I went there and let me tell you it was kind of freaky. Even if you don't believe in ghosts it is rich with San Diego History. There is a lot of good shopping and dining there as well. The resturants are pretty GBP friendly too.
If you had the chance to really get away Julian is nice too.

Actually Ocean Beach is closest to the airport. But I agree with the others, Coronado would kill two birds with one stone. La Jolla shores is really nice right now with the leopard sharks (totally safe) swimming around your legs. Warning, we are in a bad heat wave right now so you may want to plan accordingly. There is also a new outlet center down by the border if Mexico is on your itenery. Have a wonderful visit!
