Seriously...can no one give me an opinion on the band (fobi)?
I am finding all kinds of "canned" answers, but does anyone on TT have the fobi band (or is it fobi-pouch?)
I have figured out what it is but have not read anything that has said if it is a plus to have the band or a neg...if it is really helpful having the band to help assure that your pouch opening doesnt stretch?
My mom has never heard of it. (She is five years post op.)
Humpf....I guess I can always keep searching the web.

Wow, must be such a help having had your Mum been through it 5years ago i imagine. I am meeting with my surgeon fri just to go over all my last minute questions, get diet advice etc and then starting my 2week pre-op no carbs diet next wed. EEK! Cant believe its literally just around the corner. Best of luck to you and hopefully speak to you again. Kelly

The only person I know that had the fobi pouch was Roseanne Barr/Arnold.
From what I heard, it is an outdated and out of use method of which RNY was an updated method but I don't know for sure.
Why is your doctor pushing you towards that vs. the RNY or Sleeve?

Oh no... it is RNY, but he puts a ring above the insertion point. I guess it is to keep the "tube" from stretching back out.
I dont know the real word...where your esophagus inserts into your pouch....He said that after a few years, that stretches out...but, with that ring there it keeps it tight. SO it is sort of like lapband and RNY...but it isnt adjustable.
And he isnt pushing it at all....he just "offers" it if i want it. It is not standard procedure, and if i dont TELL him I want it, then he doesnt do it. So if i have not made up my mind before i go under, he wont just automatically do it.
I do not know if it is the same thing as a FOBI pouch...or if he just uses the BAND that Dr. Fobi created. KWIM?

It is not anywhere near the same as the Fobi pouch, from my research.
I will be having the Fobi band 'added' to my RNY in January.

Nope, it goes on the other end...
This 'band' is a small piece of tubing that goes around the BOTTOM of your new stomach, in between the new stomach and where the small intestine now attaches. It is to help keep that opening from stretching over time. Some doctors believe that WLS failures can be caused by that opening stretching and not keeping food in the stomach for long enough to send the 'full' signal to the brain.
It made sense to me, and my surgeon is very highly regarded on the east coast.
I just found this:
How does the Fobi Pouch differ from RNY?
But I have to disagree with calling it a Fobi Pouch.
This where I see that there is a big difference, but maybe the website is wrong?

Well, damn...i guess I really do need to research more. I have only found things on Fobi-pouch...which isnt what my surgeon called it at all. I mean, it is a RNY with the band added (like you say.) So, i suppose i have been researching the wrong thing this entire time (yup, all four hours of it.)

My Surgeon does that too. But I don't think it is offered I think it is something he does for all his patients. I don't know what the name of the "band" is but I know he said he did.

I did see some place that this is also called a "revision" when it is done AFTER the RNY...after the person starts to regain some weight, they will go back and add this band.

From what I've read about the fobi pouch, it is essentially the RNY procedure, but uses a band instead of staples for the opening into the intestine. Or something like that. I have read that Roseanne Barr gained back all but 15 of the pounds she lost. YIKES.
