Default A little worried

I have seen a disturbing trend. I see and here a lot of people that have had WLS talking about drinking alcohol. I never drank so its not a problem for me but in all of my classes and from other sources I was informed that WLS and drinking can kill very easily. I would love to here what y'all have to say. Was I misinformed?

Do you mean can drinking after WLS kill you? I don't know why it would be any more likely to kill you to drink after WLS than it would before WLS. But you might develop alcohol poisoning on less alcohol after WLS, because we absorb it much faster, and alcohol poisoning can kill you.

I have never heard that drinking booze after WLS could kill you. I guess if you go out and drink 10+ shots of the hard stuff could but that could happen to a normal person (non WLS) also. I have a drink(s) every now and then & I don't have a problme with it. Other then it hits me faster so I can drink less.

Kaiser was pretty serious that alcohol was a no-no after surgery, I didnt pay much attention to it as I dont drink, but I do know some people were very worried about not drinking anymore, but I have found the NO drinking thing to be a myth, needless to say, moderation is serious, but then again, I prefer to date women, that are post GBS!!!!!

I drink when I go out with friends and I've had some nights where I drank a boatload and was fine. You just gotta be careful because you get drunk quicker. I've always been able to hold my own though, but you gotta be careful because you can drink some and feel fine, but then 5 minutes after it'll hit you and you wont remember a thing. Drinking can kill anyone if they drink beyond what their body can handle.

I drink socially on occasion and I have not found I react any different at all. I kept waiting for the big difference that everyone talks about, but I did not notice anything. I am not sure why. I have been out and had several drinks and did not get super drunk (moreso than I would have). The main thing I notice is that my stomach is super sensitive the next day and I cannot eat at all. I can drink protein shakes, but no solid food for the whole day.

I am glad to read this b/c I have my high school reunion about 4 months after my surgery is scheduled and I have been thinking about how I am going to not drink w/out anyone noticing. The normal tricks are to drink club soda (carbonation) or juice (dumping potential). I of course would rather just enjoy a few glasses of wine. Do people ever dump on wine? I am all about not letting people know I had the surgery, so I am anxious over anything that might draw attention to it. I suppose people will just think I'm pregnant if I drink water...

What's wrong with saying you gave up drinking? That's what I say.

Ok I went through kaiser. Like I said I don't drink at all so it's not an issue for me. Kaiser pretty much said we could really hurt/kill our self if we drank post surgery. Thanks for the info people! what an awesome site.

Could be that you are a little early out to be drinking.

To the OP, drinking won't kill you post-op. Maybe alcohol poisioning, but you get drunk a lot quicker and on a lot less. Plus the carbonation and some juices we can no longer tolerate. No girly drinks for me anymore, too much sugar makes me feel like crap & when i'm out at a bar, thats a misreable feeling.
