Default Profect Protien

Hi all, I just wanted to share that I had a nice discussion with my Dr/Surgeon yesterday, he called to check in and see how I was doing. I mentioned to him that though I did enjoy the protien powders, I liked more so the juice looking, koolaid tasting ones as well but was told they were not as good for us as they were collegan based and he said, drink them. He was not sure where the OP got the information but these types of drinks are developed and made for WLS and are absorbed into your body as well if not better than the powder protien supplements. He said a 3.5 ounce drink will need to be sipped and enjoyed, not chugged, but there is no indication to anyone that protien collegan is not absorbed. He said if it says 25 grams of protien, that means your body will absorb 25 grams of protien, don't just gulp it down but enjoy it and allow your body time to absorb. Just wanted to share.

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Halloween.

Ellie

It might have been me who said that collagen protein is not well absorbed. I wonder if your surgeon is familiar with something called Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Scoring? It rates protein on a scale of 0 - 100. Protein with a score of 100 is the most digestible or absorbable. Whey isolate protein gets a score of 100. Collagen gets a score of 0.

You can learn more in this thread: Is all protein created equal?.

Yeah I am going to have to agree with Kelly here but your surgeon is woefully misinformed. Unfortunately there are many surgeons who are not familiar with the differences in proteins and vitamins etc for post WLS patients. Those protein shots have come to be marketed to WLS surgery patients but were originally developed for body builders to have something portable and quick to use while working out.

I am not usually one to say go against what your surgeon tells you. But on this one I am afraid I feel like I have to. You can follow your surgeon on this one, but I am sure if you posted the question to our own Dr Callery he will also tell you that not all proteins are the same. You would see some issues crop up from protein deficiency if you were to use those collagen based proteins.

There are juice flavored ones that are clear that are whey isolate. Nectar is one and the Isopure drinks are another that comes to mind. I understand that taste is important and lord knows I have doctored mine to make them as pleasant as I can, but first and foremost is the quality of my health and what goes into my body.

I will add this about the collagen protein. I don't know if it matters to you or not. They make it by boiling the skin of horses and cows. Seriously.

Thanks guys for the input and after reading the link Kelly attached I guess I should have added, this is not the only way I get in my protien, more likely the least way. As I said I do still drink the powdered Whey and drink Isopure, and have started adding more solid foods. No way should this be the only way to get protien in, but sure as can be, should NOT ever be the only way to get protien in, but as a supplement and an occasional add-on they are fine.

My meaning was when I had mentioned them in the past I was met with you should not be taking those...and I am just saying, it is ok, just don't live on it or think thats your only protien source.

I'm no lover of collagen protein but we need to get things into perspective.

Pepsin (eynzyme from pigs' stomachs) and rennin (rennet) is derived from an enzyme found in a young animal's stomach (usually calves). Both are used in the production of cheese.

Jello (gelatin) is another example - that contains collagen, as does some low-fat yogurts.

Early out, I used the protein bullets purely because it was the only protein I could get down. It wasn't the best, I know that but I worked on the premise that any protein was better than none.

Funny I have never even seen these, but have heard of them and my surgeon and nut both say steer clear from them.
I figured I better stay away because I have a hard time with my shakes as it is and I don't want to like them and quit trying on the powders.

you girls Corrine and Kelly especially, really know your stuff!!! Thanks for sharing all your studies with us!!

A lot of doctors are dumb, there not stupid, there just dumb!!

Far too many times we put our lives into the hands of doctors, and that normally works out well, (has for me a couple times!!), but with all the daily information that changes like the seasons, its very difficult for doctors to keep up with the changing information, and when it comes to nutrition, they are usually behind the times. This is why when it comes to some of more mundane things like nutrition, you need to rely on people that do it for a living, and stay up with the times, but as many of us here have learned, that is nbot always the nutritionist, this surgery is still a mystery to a lot in the field of nutrition!

Thats why when ever I need any information, I come HERE!! I have learned more from the people around here. Corrine has educated me more than ANY nutritionist I have talked to!!

Someone gave some to me and I brought them to my Nut to ask her about them, and she grabbed it out of my hand and tossed it in her trash. Said that they were pointless, no better than drinking water as far as the amount of protein we would absorb. And made me promise not to buy them or drink them again. I thought her reaction a tad over the top at the time, but once I saw the information that Beth had, that said why it was pretty much pointless for someone not getting any other foods (meaning not getting any amino acids needed to digest) I realized why she reacted the way she did.

I would take Corrine's word over that of my doctor any day, too, but I wouldn't really expect someone new to TT to do that. I would take Corrine's word because I've come to know her and she's explained why she has reached certain conclusions and pointed out articles I could read about things and I have learned that she really does her research and what she says makes sense. But to someone new to TT, she's just some faceless person posting on the internet. I hope that doesn't sound insulting, 'cause I sure don't mean it that way. And of course that's all I am too, some faceless person posting on the internet. Of course I think I know what I'm talking about, but there is no reason Ellie or anyone else should listen to me over their doctor. Ellie did the right thing, she asked her doctor a good question. Unfortunately, I think she got bad advice from her doctor. Unfortunately, that happens sometimes.

All I can say is to do your research. Don't just take your doctor's word for something. I am not saying to take my word for it either. Research it, and come to your own conclusion.

Kelly
