Final clearances
I've almost finished my 6 month pre-op criteria- Going for a 3-4 hour test with the cardiologist on Monday, scheduled for an endoscopy on Nov. 17 and the pulmonary appointment is next Friday.
I've been experimenting with smoothies, they have been my breakfast for the past week, some have been good some have been pretty horrible.
Does anyone ever pay attention to calories after the surgery I'm a little concerned that the intake may be too low ( of all things ?
I'm feeling very much in limbo right now, and the friggin' scales at all these different specialist keep reading different numbers, the one at the endoscopist was especially hateful

immediately post-op, my doc told me not to worry about calories or protein or any of that stuff and to just focus on staying hydrated and sticking to the food list.
I didn't count calories or worry about my protein in-take until I was on semi-solids and could start eating yogurt and cottage cheese.
it varies from person to person, but I'm almost a year out and have still never seen a need for protein shakes, for myself at least. my nutritionist and surgeon strongly recommended getting all of my protein from solid foods and I have no problem meeting that goal without throwing shakes into the mix (though I do drink the occasional glass of skim milk or low-sugar/fortified soy milk)

I am currently on a 2 week pre op liquid diet, and was told that if I could keep my calories @ 1000 and my protein above 60 g. Then we should be good. The nurtritionist said that it would be like that for 2 weeks post op as well.
I am sure that it is different with every surgeons office. I would definitely check with your surgeon and/or nutritionist to get a sample of their post op diet.
Good Luck!!!

I was actually told not to count calories after surgery. I was told to make sure I got 64 ounces of liquid per day and at least 60 grams of protein per day, and I was given a list of stuff I could eat at each stage. The idea was that if I stuck to the allowed foods, which were basically low carbs, low fat, low sugar, high protein stuff, I would pretty much automatically be getting the right number of calories. Periodically I do count calories for a few days, becasue I just get curious about how many I'm eating. It seems like it comes up to the same numbers of other people who are equally far along that are counting theirs everyday. But it's a lot easier not to have to count them, in my opinion.

X2...
I admire anyone that can get the protein they need (60 or 70 grams) per day from food, that has never happened to me...I just cant ear that much food in a day, even after a year ad a half, I rely on my shakes every day!!
But the damn carb monster is the real bitch.....

I get close to 80 to 100 grams of protein a day, without using any shakes at all. I rely on greek yogurt & kashi protein cereal for breakfast which starts me right off with over 20 grams right there. Sometimes (often) end with the same for 40 grams w/o taking anything else I eat into consideration.
What is a day of food like for you?
