Default pre-op diet question

I was just curious as to what the 6 month pre-op diet is all about? I haven't even heard of this yet (im still in the beginning of the whole process though) and i've seen many people talking about how they are on a 6 month diet and have to lose a certain amount of weight before they will set a surgery date...why is that? the reason for getting the surgery is usually due to the fact that you can't lose weight, if i were to go on a diet before surgery and seen that i was losing weight, why go along with the surgery? i dont know but if someone can let me know what the 6 month pre-op diet consists of i was thinking i could get myself a good head start on the new eating habits ;o)

it seems to vary from surgeon to surgeon.

some want you to have a 10% weight loss... in my case, the nutritionist that my surgeon set me up with was just like "listen, obviously diets aren't working or else you wouldn't be here," so we spent the 3 month pre-op diet that insurance required going over what my nutritional needs were going to be like after surgery and such.

I kinda miss my nutritionist... she got me to learn how to cook fish

I thought it was part of the Insurance criteria, just part of them being sure you have tried to go on a healthy eating plan and tried to lose weight prior to them paying for a surgery. Mine has been nutritional information mostly as well. It's a silly hoop to jump through, most of us are nutritional experts.
