Default Low Dose Aspirin

I have read that we cannot take aspirin or ibuprophen after RNY surgery and forever. I am concerned because I take a daily low dose aspirin because of a stroke like event 4 years ago. I will stop it 2 weeks prior to surgery and take injections instead for those 2 weeks. I didn't ask about after surgery. My husband is also om aspirin and is having RNY. What do people take as cardiovascular preventive medication? I don't want to be on cumodin.I also take excedrin for occasional migraines, but I think I can live without that. It is the daily low dose aspirin that worries me. I read one post that said encoated low dose aspirin with a full glass of water to flush it quickly through the pouch would be OK because it dissolves in small intestine. Any one with experience with this?

I'm sorry hon but I think the best thing for you is the lowest dose of cumodin. You can't risk taking that asprin after surgery and getting a bleeding or perforated ulcer.

You really need to talk to your doctor about what your options will be. Some people who do need a low dose aspirin continue to take one after surgery but take some sort of acid blocker with it to reduce the risk of ulcers from the aspirin. But that doesn't guarantee the aspirin won't cause ulcers, it's just makes it a little less likely. So it's a risk. You'll need to decide along wtih your doctor what the best course of course of action is.

I've never heard that taking a coated aspirin with a full glass of water would be OK. Actually, I've heard that we probably shouldn't take coated stuff because it doesn't stay in our pouch long enough for the coating to be broken down. And if your goal is to flush it quickly out of the pouch with a full glass of water, then it sure wouldn't stay in there long enough for the coating to be broken down. And the coating must break down in order for it to be absorbed by the intestines. Also, it's gonna be some time before you'll be able to drink a full glass of water at a time. Right after surgery, you will only be able to take tiny little sips at a time. You won't be able to guzzle a full glass of water.

Please search on my name "Grimper" and read the post I just put up today in another thread. You don't want to mess with aspirin any more -- trust me!
