Well...I guess I jinxed myself saying my hernia would get better on it's own. 8 months out and I'm starting to have symptoms. She put me on Nexium for now until my appt next month and we'll discuss if she needs to go back in for a hernia repair. I would definitely get your hernia repaired at the time of surgery!

My husband just had a procedure where they found a hiatal hernia. The doctor said he doesn't do surgery on them anymore since they just come back. He prefers to treat it with medicine (Prilosec/Nexium/etc). However, if they are in the area for WLS anyway, I would bet doctors take the chance and fix it while there.

I also have a hiatal hernia. The bad thing about it is that usually when you have one the reflux is pretty bad. It is not dangerous and when the Dr.s do the surgery's, they take care of it at the same time. Sort of like a two for one.

So here goes again!

I had my EGD last Friday and they found that I have a hiatal hernia. My surgeon said they will repair the hernia when they do the bypass. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of hernia before and if so was it repaired? I read the info the doctors gave me and I guess most people who have them don't even know it, have no symptoms and can't feel it. Sometimes they don't need to be repaired and I guess you can been born with them.

So..has anyone had this before?

I had a rather large hiatal hernia and I did have symptons..My GB RNY was done on October 8th and my surgeon did repair the hernia at the same time.
I guess it would depend on the size of the hernia and how long you've had it to have symptons or not. Then again, some people may have symptons and other ones may not. Good luck!
