Then give them a pack of crayons and tell them to go play.

All I can say is be prepared ... people will make snotty comments and stupid, insensitive remarks and be completely resentful that you are improving yourself.

With every level of improvement you gain ... they feel less self worth and more threatened. I hate to say it ... especially the women in your life .. be it relative, friend or co-worker. They could be complacent in you being no competition ... now they have something to fear.

Yeah it's going to be really interesting because I work for an integrative (alternative) medicine physicians that are very pro supplementation and doing things 'naturally' so it will be interesting, especially since they can't stand back as a non-physician and say congratulations, the sort of want to study you. I'm sure there's gonna be a good story or ten.

I think it will be semi-realistic since I see the board twice before surgery and I should be significantly lighter each time.

Or what about comments from people who don't know you used to be fat

AMEN! If some people only knew how much I fight to eat every day because I can't get protein down because it hurts like I'm eating rocks. I hate meal time, but I do it because I HAVE to. Pretty pathetic when it takes 30 mins to eat 2 or 3 ounces of moist, soft, delicious chicken and nothing else! I get so angry when trying to eat sometimes because I want to eat and I know I NEED to eat, but can't. You are right about every single day of our life. I NEVER get away from it. Some days are just better than others and IT SUCKS!!! People like who the OP was talking about light the fire in my butt. It's fighting words for me too.

Mom,

I can empathize. I lost 150lbs by working out and watching what I ate before my surgery. I busted my butt, and worked really hard. A couple of times I slipped and gained back a few pounds...only the goal of getting my RNY kept me from slipping all the way off the road to a better future.

I would hear comments from people like..."You are doing so well, you won't even need the surgery..."

Or comments that were even higher on the DUMBEST THINGS YOU HEARD TODAY SCALE like...

"I know someone who had that surgery and they didn't lose any weight..."

"My cousin's friend had that and had a heart attack...."

Don't let it bother you. I know that's easier said than done, but one thing I can tell you is this....Make it YOUR thing. Don't let anyone derail you because they either don't understand what you are going through, or even worse, they want to keep you fat so they can maintain some sense or feeling of superiority.

I still work out in the pool for an hour to an hour and a half every morning. It is my time. Time for me to work on me.

As for nay sayers.........

just tell them to follow the pre op diet with no cheating, tell them to try it around a holiday or when someone is sitting right in front of them eating their favorite food while all they can have is some water.

I'm sorry they have that attitude. If only they knew. This has been more work than I have every done! Unfortunately, there is probably no way to make them get it. I think the best you can do is seek support elsewhere and limit the time you spend with them, especially discussing the surgery with them.
