Default Facing the Psych Evaluation...

Tuesday is my Psych eval and I am dreading it......why? Because I am horrified of Psychologist/Psychiatrist/Psychotherapists. I started seeing a Psychotherapist about a month ago but due to his schedule, I havent returned to see him. Probably a good thing too because he was answering cell phone calls and calling other patients during our session. Anyway, just wanted to find out how other people felt during their psych eval. Thanks!

my psych eval was super boring.

she asked about my medical history (specifically psychiatric history, of which I had none), talked a bit about weight management in general and post-op life to get a feel for whether or not I knew what I was getting into, and ran through a quick questionnaire. whole thing must have taken 30 minutes tops... the psychiatrist did mention having to deny another patient a couple weeks prior, though, due to a history of depression and just the overall vibe they were getting from the patient.

My psych eval was a joke, she would talk about mundane things like my history, my family, and then toss in random questions like, "Who is the current President?" or "Is there anyone else in the room besides us?" and the smartass in me wanted soooooo bad to say something but I kept that verbal filter in check for once

I am afraid that my past psychiatric problems will play a major role. Back in 2002 I had major postpartum depression. In 1996 I saw a psychotherapist after my Grandmother died from Lung Cancer. I was only 16 at the time. And just recently, I have felt overwhelmed at home and stressed about money so I decided to see a psychotherapist again......more or less just to have someone to talk to. I am afraid that this is gonna play too big of a role and get me denied......I am not wanting this surgery because I want to be a supermodel. I want to be healthy for myself and my kids. Period. But ya, I feared that my diagnosis will be my downfall.

Jenn, you're history shouldn't keep you from qualifying for WLS. I have a diagnosis of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and in fact am on antidepressant medication. I have been for about ten years. All my doctor wanted to know was that my condition was stable and that I would be able to follow through with the diet and vitamins and stuff after surgery.

By the way, I'm sorry you saw an idiot for a therapist. I had a therapist once that would do her nails during our sessions. She was not my therapist for very long! I had a friend who could top that story, though. Her psychologist once fell asleep during a session.

I agree, it should have no impact on your qualification. If anything, they will see it as, you are strong enough to ask for help when you feel you need it. I think it goes all for you. They will know that if you need andvice, you wont be afraid to ask for it. Good luck to you!

Just tell the truth, and only answer the question he asks....its a breeze, in fact I dont think I have ever heard of anyone around here being denied as a result of the psych eval...

Just make sure when it asks if you keep gerbils in your pockets and fondle them you answer "NO". You will crack up at the crazy questions they ask you on the 100 page form.

yeah - I agree. be yourself. use your common sense. don't talk too much. answer the question and then shut up.

I've been treated for depression more than once and most recently took medication after my sister died, told him that when he asked. The only thing he said was "well, if it had been less than 6 months ago, I would probably tell you to wait before making a big decision like this.

Also, don't bother returning to that shrink who took phone calls during your session. Totally unprofessional and rude. Find another one. Sometimes you've got to try them on for size. Maybe if you really like the one doing your eval you can ask if they'll refer you to someone.

I got to take this big two hour 550 or so question test....but I have to say it was VERY accurate. He went into how it could affect my relationships...either make them or break them. He gave his blessing and it was all good.

So if you are super crazy, worry. If not, dont! But be honest. If you aren't you could be setting yourself up for failure, but it sounds like you are pretty with it And ask questions if you feel the need to!
