it really blows my mind how the cops let this guy just walk away

Uggh. Unbelievable. Hope your friend and his dog are alright! How do u have someone without identification, proof they can drive, proof they have mandated insurance just vanish?

OMFG! I just clicked on the link and then on the other link that had 25 pictures of criminals and what they were charged for as far as killing or hurting their children! As a parent how do you stab your 2 year old 100 times with a pair of scissors.

Not sure exactly what the food stamps comment was aimed towards. There was no mention of food stamps in the article. If you were referring to food stamps being some form of help that the DSS might have offered... food stamps does not a healthy meal make. They will buy the same junk food that cash, credit or a check will.

I think it's pretty general knowledge what is and isn't healthy. I'm sure the boy at 14 knows the difference between "this is going to make me fat" and "this is good for me". Like the difference between pizza and broccoli. Young teen girls are majorly concious of their weight. No reason to think that a young male teen would be any different, especially considering the hand he's been dealt.

I think the blame lies on both the mother and the teenager. What they need to explore is the emotional issues that surround why HE makes the choices that he makes. Even if his mom cooks healthy, he's the one making the concious choice to eat the food she makes, doesn't make or buys for him.

$10 says he's got abandonment issues and he's one lonely teenager.

This is a good post, fact and comments not new to most of us, but the issue is, does the mother deserve to go to JAIL for the "crime"?

it's really obnoxious for me to think that they separate a kid from his mom (and send the mom to jail!) for neglect when there are tons of a-holes out there that CPS has determined to be a real danger and yet they remain with the kids or they try to reunite them.

unbelievable.

550 lbs is really extreme, but I think it just goes to show how deep the bias against fat goes, whereas you know, smacking your kid on the head or beating them repeatedly nets nothing.

Airforcewife is right - at 14 it's both parties causing the issue - and mostly the kid. I feel really bad for him, food is probably his only comfort.

The only thing that I was saying was.......she didn't need foods stamps to purchase "more" food for him.....that she needed help for him but maybe in another form. I didn't/don't mean anything bad with the food stamps comment at all.

I know that at 14yrs old, I was already putting myself on diets. I knew exactly what was making me fat and I tired to control it. BUT, my parents were parents that "made" me eat everything on my plate, even if I was full.

**comment for the red area**

Especially if the 14yr old spends a lot of time alone....while Mom is working. That is why I said that instead of the Mom being arrested, they should have "helped" out the family. Get them counseling, food prep help...something!!
