Well, although that sounds amazing. Man pick mate, man throw mate over shoulder, man have way with mate, man fall asleep. So if many man pick same mate then only mate will be left. No more man. Not fun for mate.
I think that stopped about the same time the dinosaurs went extinct or man invented lighter not sure which was more important.
