Default Disappointed in California Supreme Court

I just don't understand the decision to uphold Prop 8, but allow the 18,000 marriages performed prior to 11/5/08 to stand. It seems hypocritical to allow equality to those who happened to be in a place to want to marry someone prior to the vote, but say "too bad so sad" to those who did after. This doesn't mean that California doesn't have gay marriage, there will be a few thousand legal ones and a bunch of people who are relegated to second-class citizenship.

I am not GLBT, but I don't think you have to be to realize that this is unfair. This whole process is so reminiscent of Loving v. Virginia (which struck down miscegenation laws prohibiting people of different races to marry) that it is sickening to see that we as a society are letting xenophobia take precedence over justice and fairness.

I know some people are going to be happy about this decision viewing it as some sort of triumph for morality, but it isn't. For those of you who are happy about denying rights to those whare different from yourself, I ask you to think about changing the example to be, "What if we voted to make you a second class citizen?" Seriously, who has the right to make you less equal than anyone else who goes to work everyday, abides by the laws of our society, but just happens to love someone of the same gender?

We are all on the forum here because we were/are obese. As obese people we are used to being treated poorly due to our size, doesn't seem equally wrong to subjugate someone for something they cannot control?

I guess I am done. Sad call California.

P.S.- If you are going to flame me over this, please post your own thread. I don't want to hear it. If you want to spew hate, please don't hijack this thread.

Thank you.

Its NUTS! Who are we to say who can and can't be married? Who are we to say who someone should or shouldn't love???? I hope that someday people will wake up and realize they are not the one that should be judging people. It's just sad!

Unfortunately, the CA Supreme Court is doing what's its required to do, follow the law and the state constitution. The voters of CA decided that marriage was between a man and woman and to have the CASC overturn their vote would go against the basis of our system of government, regardless what we think is right.

It does TOTALLY suck. Well, the whole Prop 8 thing sucked. No matter what you think of gay marriage, I don't think it's right that 51% of voters can change the state CONSTITUTION! Especially when it's to deny rights to a minority group.

*Very* disappointed.

I agree. Not sure why law abiding, tax paying citizens don't get the same equality because they fell in the love with 'the wrong person'. And what I don't understand is why the vote is left up to the citizens. What is it their business who should be allowed to be married? If that's the case, then every motion and propostion that goes through the courts needs to be voted on by every person in the state.
Our gov. just passed state law that gives equal rights to GLBT, but still does not allow marraige. To me that's just as insane, but at least one more step in the right direction.

I agree on allowing people to marry who they want and not penalizing obese people. Unfortunately, our society does punish those whom are different. As an obese person my life insurance with no health problems, zero health problems other than being fat is ridiculous. I dont fit into the 6-2 220 pound perfect image of an American male. So yes I agree life isnt fair but it is what it is. I personally am waiting for "Change" but I dont see much of that either or any time soon.

Default The government should get out ...

I think the government should be out of marriage altogether. How can any institution that has messed up divorce and family court so badly be the same institution people count on to join people together? They do not have a good track record. I think people are lobbying for the wrong thing. Yes equality, FOR so many reasons, but the best reason I can think of is that the government simply isn't qualified to make those decisions.

(I am a little opinionated. Sorry.)

I'm not just disappointed in the decision, I'm totally disgusted by this whole thing. Marriage is sacred, regardless of who is getting married, and should not be directed by any political governing body.

I became a minister so I can perform gay weddings - that's how much I believe and support this. Whether "legal" or not, I will continue to offer my services to those who wish to have a wedding.

What's next, mixed marriages to be declared illegal?
