I fly all the time. I was wondering what airline you are flying. If you are interested I can give you the tips I have learned from flying so much.

we're flying on american airlines since mom pitched in some free miles for us to fly rather than drive.

Any help is appreciated!

On most of the planes we are (so far, since the planes keep changing) on the 2 seater side together, and most of those arm rests do raise up. There's one plane so far that we're on a 3 side without a choice, but i did select one of the seats with a movable arm rest between DH and I

American Airlines still offers the option of upgrading to first class at the airport if there are available seats. You have to go to the check-in counter and use those kiosks. The last couple times my DH has done it, the price ranged anywhere from $60-$90 per person each direction. This is always great if you can afford it. If not keep in mind on most airplanes where it is a 2 seats next to each other the armrest next to the window and on the aisle raise up. If it does not raise up just by lifting some have a button on the underneath side near the back of the armrest. These do however have to be down for takeoff and landing. Most planes with the 3 seats across just the middle armrests raise up. Don't hesistate to ask for the seatbelt extensions if you need one. I know several people who do not need the extension but ask for it since it does make the seatbelt more comfortable to wear while flying. I also personally think that the smaller airplanes have larger seatbelts. Could just be all in my head though. Another plus of getting to the airport early is that you can check and see if there are any exit row seats still available. They do not book these till the day of the flight and do give them option of them to their frequent fliers first. But I see them available all the time. I would not count on the airplane having many empty seats as all the airlines have cut back on their number of flights so they aren't flying half full.

Keep in mind on American they no longer give you free food. They have a snack cart you can purchase from. I would highly recommend that you take your snacks on the plane with you. You can even bring a sandwich or salad from home as you can take these on the plane with you. Just remember if you do the salad put the salad dressing on the salad because if you don't they are going to count it as part of your liquids as you go through security and you would need to put your 3oz container in your quart sized baggie...lol
