Vitamin question
OK, so today's BigDog dumb question of the day...
Calcium, since we are suppose to take them, I went to the local Costco, and bought the big bottle, so I get them home and there aint no way those fricken horse pills are gonna go down, so I get the pill splitter, and these things ars so fricken hard, and it makes me wonder how they are going to be absorbed when we take them, and because of the length of time they are actually in our system. So I then go to Mothers store (those locals in the Orange County area knows this place...its heaven!!) and get some capsules, I open them up and dump them in my shakes, nice and easy, and I figure the powder form may get absorbed better.
Now the question, being the engineer, I am always trying to make the better mouse trap, so I throw the Costco pills into the good ole Magic Bullet (oh and use a doner cup, these little things are so hard they cracked one of the cups!!) and grind them into powder, and again put a little bit less than a teaspoon (which was two pills ground up) in my shakes, and I think I'm golden, the question is.....
Is this a good idea?
Is this changing anything about the pills in the nutritional values in the ground form?
Next question, how much are suppose to take in a day?
These are 500 mg per two tablets, and according to the bottle, anything over 2000mg a day probably wont get absorbed, true or false, and how much should we take in a day?
I am using two teaspoons a day, which is about 1100-1200mg a day.

Baja - the current calcium recommendation is 1500-2000mg a day - taken in doses of around 500mg.
I don't know that I'd mess around grinding up calcium pills - if you drop them into liquid and wait a few minutes, they'll dissolve anyway. That way you wouldn't have to worry about measuring out the correct dosage.
I doubt that grinding the pills up is going to alter the nutritional status.
Put a couple of those babies in with your milk/water and leave it for a few minutes, add your protein powder and give it a buzz - got your protein and calcium all in one.
I know some people who just drop a couple of calcium pills into a bottle of water 3 or 4 times a day.

you can grind pills in your magic bullet! sweetness! (which blade would you use?)
Also, how long do you have to be out to swallow said horse pills? I just want to look forward to ONE day not having to chew my calciums up.

Debs - what chocolate calcium chewables do you use?
Bariatric Advantage are having an on/off thing with bringing out my beloved Citracal Creamy Bites. The last newsletter I got was that it was on again and they'd be bringing out the calcium citrate chews later this year.

Vitamins
Heres my two cents. My Doctor told me I had to take 1600 mg of Calcium Citrate per day. 800 mg Vitamin D and two Adult Multi vitamins. 1000 mg of B12 per week and 100 mg of B1 Per week
Bariatricchoice.com has the lozenger they are chewable. Also there is a Calcium citrate Petite which are tiny compare to the normal horse pills

My 2 cents on calcium
Hi all ~
My doctor always told me to make sure and take 1000 mg of calcium but it had to be in the form of citrate with vitamin D. I actually have both capsules and chewables of the calcium on my countertop. When I feel like I need a chocolate fix I take the chewable which is usually every day but once a week I'll pop the capsules. Building Blocks vitamins have a great chocoate calcium. I even called them for a sample and they sent it to me free of charge. How cool was that!
