This is just my opinion, but kids want candy. I say buy something you despise! I hate almond joys. Maybe I should get those! LOL

In my neighborhood most of the houses just dump the candy in a bowl and stick it on the porch and you can take what you want.

Hell no! Not with the little hoods around here! They dump the whole bowl in their bag. It's not me speculating, kids have told me they LOVE when people do that! LOL

Default Mcdonalds gift certificates

McDonalds has coupons for kids to get free little treats, There $1 for several coupons and then you hand them out. Some are for ice cream, a drink, a fry, etc.

I agree, we cant take it all away from the kids we should educate on moderation.

If you decide not to go with candy this year, I saw mini Play Dough containers in a Halloween bowl at Costco recently - I think it was 9.99 for 50 or something. I always hated geting apples (not that I would have ever been allowed to eat them, chock full o' razor blades as they might have been ), raisins, and popcorn balls, but Play Dough might have been kind of cool...

I went with the candy at Costco (250 piece bag) 'cuz we get a LOT of trick-or-treaters. It's sitting in a drawer and, no, I'm not tempted by it!

Not to hijack your thread, Jon, but has anyone noticed that there is a marked lack of joy and civility in trick-or-treaters in the modern era? Seriously - I'm not just being an old fart here. Every year it seems to get worse. Most of them don't even say "Trick or Treat!" in my neighborhood (we get lots of kids from all over town for some reason) - they just shove their pillowcases at you without speaking or smiling (when you can see their faces), and don't even say thanks. And when their parents are with them, the parents don't even do the "Billy! Susie! What do we say?!? What do we say?!? Thaaaank yooouuu!" routine that they did back in the Dark Ages when I was young... The kids I see at my door act like it's a torturous chore to go trick-or-treating!

They expect you to know why they're here. They think they don't need to say trick or treat because you know why they're there! I was never in my life prompted to say thank you, or smile, I just did it naturally. These nice people are giving me candy, and I need to thank them for their offer! I would smile, say thank you and have a nice night!

Default I know how you feel!!!

I love Halloween, it's my one day to be "normal" as my mom always told me!!! he he he As much as it kills me to give out candy I do...and I buy all the good stuff too!!! I didn't even have a problem with it till now that we are talking about it...now I feel guilty...I could be contributing to them getting high blood pressure, diabetes, over weight...gosh I am horrible!!! Ohhhh well they have the rest of the year to exercise it off!!!

As an EX Apartment Manager, I agree that the kids are getting RUDE!!! What kills me out here in Southern California there are certain parents that take their kids or teen agers out trick or treating and they have their own bag!!! I am kinda rude back cause I wont give teenagers (over18 or adults) any candy!!! Last year I had a group of 20 or more 18 or older kids come to my door and I told them to keep on walking cause they were not getting anything from me!!! If the little ones say trick or treat on their own I let them get their own candy and 2 handfuls if they want it!!!

Can I clone you and have an army of you come trick-or-treating in different costumes in my neighborhood? It would definitely make handing out candy (which I used to love, thank you very much, lest anyone think I'm one of those "porch-light-off" curmudgeons!) MUCH more enjoyable!

Sure, but what would I do with all that candy?! That would be 100 of me that can't eat it! You could hand out little packets of baby carrots or something!

And maybe some fat-free ranch?!

I went to Costco too...actually just got back! I saw the playdough, but that's more for little kids. I don't know about you, but I get a lot of middle-high schoolers. I also saw that huge bag for 12.99. There was just TOO many Snickers in there and I might get tempted. So, I passed. As I said, I think I'll be buying something I dislike. Halloween is my favorite holiday. When I hand out candy it's "One for you, two for me!" LOL
