Default OT: Wanted to share my son's 1st day of 7th grade!

He is an asperger's kid, so he has some pretty tough social handicaps. He has a couple of friends, that are in the same social group as he is. He has been basically picked on by most kids since the 3rd grade.

Yesterday he came home from school and said everyone was nice to him! Even this girl who has tortured him for four years asked to be his partner in math class. DH says it is becasue she must know how smart he is in math, but she gets straight A's also.

I think the kids did some growing up over the summer, and if we can help DS work on some of his quirky behaviors (i.e. not doing them in school) I think he is going to have a great year.

Here he is in all his glory, going off to 7th grade for the first time

Awe Marie what a cutie you have there. Kids can be cruel. Hopefully they are maturing and things won't be so rough this time around.

Glad to hear he had a great day...and hope it continues throughout the year! My daughter (which is in 11th grade) says that the "teasing" of other kids really is a major "no-no" these days! Most kids no longer view it as "cool", if you know what I mean.

So hopefully from now on he'll be embraced for his differences, because ALL kids are different in one way or another, right?

I can not believe I just read this. My daughter just started 7th grade and she has Aspergers Syndrome as well. I was so concerned about the whole JR High thing and so far her experience has been good as well. She as 2 friends so they help her negotiate the "newness". The staff at her school is AWESOME. She just started 10 days ago and we already have her IEP set UP!
I will love to hear all about his progress in school and how it goes over the years!
P.S. He is a VERY handsome boy

My little sister has Aspergers Syndrome also, and just started the 7th grade today! She is on home-hospital though, where the teacher comes to our house. She went to public jr. high for a few months last year but hated it. Glad your son had a good time.

I'm glad school is going better for him now. Teasing from other kids is an awful thing. Hopefully the new attitude of his classmates continues.

My son has Asperger's Syndrome as well. He's a senior in high school now, and just recently got his first part-time job. He still has some quirky behaviors, but overall he's much more socially adept than he used to be. I think he's always going to be a loner though, but that's just the way he is.

Awww, you're so sweet Laura. I think he's afraid to talk to girls though.

I think that is what they prefer, actually. My son says he wants to have friends, but really, he is happiest when he is in a corner reading. He doesn't like social outings like cookouts or parties. If I do drag him to a party, instead of running off with his cousins, he finds the first TV in the house and finagles a way to get permission to turn it on. Forget it if there is a video game system attached to the TV.

I often wonder what career my son will have. He will no doubt be successful. The kid is a brain on two legs. What does your son do for work?
