Default Caffeine

Ok here is my question. I have seen many posts where people are able to drink at Starbucks, Mc Donald's etc. Do the all serve decaf or are you allowed to have caffeine? My surgeon and nutritionist both said absolutely no caffeine. Is that a permanent thing? Or am I missing something. I worked REALLY hard to get off of caffeine and have NO intentions of going back to it. I am just curious if espresso can be caffeinated, kind of defeats the purpose of drinking espreso, right?

Early out you for sure want to stay away from the caffeine. At 2+ years I will occasionally have a caffeintated coffee, though I must admit I am really trying to break that. There has been quite a few studies out there that caffeine can inhibit the absorption of calcium. We already have the tendency of not absorbing enough calcium so a lot of caffeine probably isn't a very smart idea.

Even though my labs and bone density tests are good, I'm a pretty firm believer in being safe and not sorry. Once you start depleting calcium from your bones it isn't an easy and simple "fix" and the sad thing is that you can be depleting calcium and have labs that don't show it. Your body will take from your bones what it doesn't have in an attempt to keep a balance. You may never know that your bones are losing calcium until you have a fracture and you find that your bones are soft, like butter. Exactly why I think it is important for me to do all I can to remain as healthy as I am right now.

Decaf is evil, of the devil.

But do what your surgeon says, even if I don't.

Damn decaf coffee - why drink it at all. It is kinda like kissing your sister. Lips are lips, but there is just nothing there. My surgeon said limit it to one or two cups per day and that is fine.

Caffeine stimulates hunger - that is why they say that. What Beth says about caffeine is correct. Use your best judgement. To the medical community Starbucks is like big oil is to the liberals.

I had a caffeine jones before I became pregnant 18 years ago, and managed to kick the habit back then. Now I drink MAYBE one cuppa a week, usually more like one a month.

My doctor gave the OK at my 6-week appointment, but to obviously limit it. I am having one cup (6 ounces, made at home) as I write this, but won't have another for at least a week, probably longer.

Maybe I don't react the same way as most people, but it doesn't increase my appetite. And because it is a diuretic, I make sure to increase my water intake if I have a cup.

Anyway, follow whatever your doctor says.

i drink 2 6oz cups of coffee a day. i am an addict before surgery i'd drink like 1/2 the pot all day long! i would love to cut it out totally but i'm like Jim, gotta have it,

so i would say to you, use your best judgement and listen to your doctor and if you dont desire it just forget it

i used to be a coke (kind that you drink out of a bottle or can) junkie. but i stopped drinking them about 2 years ago. and i have been drinking decaf tea forever. the only time i drink caffeinated tea is if we are eating out. i really wish restaurants would offer decaf tea. so i guess that is just one less thing for me to have to give up after surgery.

McD's doesn't offer their iced sugar free coffee's in decaf.
Starbuck's doesn't offer iced coffee in decaf either. But they do have other options, like the decaf iced americano (decaf espresso mixed with ice water). None of their fraps come in decaf. But the light sugar free ones are a nice occassional treat. I don't drink hot coffee, but I do know they have a lot of decaf options there too. And they also have iced passion tea that's decaf.

Both McD's and Starbucks in New England offer them iced in Decaf. (I get my decaf battery acid from Starbucks on occasion)

Also, I spoke to my son who works at McD's about the sugar free iced coffees and whether they could be made with skim milk or only half and half.. his reply is that each individual location has their own practices on that and that if they are pre-mixed, then they're pre-mixed in their stores, so that IF enough ask for skim milk as an option, then it can be done, easily- just 'don't ask a lazy kid.. get the manager involved so they now it's wanted by their customers' he says.

In the three different locations he works, the drinks are made individually each time so that you can have the creamer or skim milk, decaf or reg.. and they're available in all sizes, but that is also a decision made by individual owners.

Really??

Here, they don't offer decaf. Starbuck's (and there are quite a few I frequent) tell me they used to offer decaf iced coffee, but they dropped it from the menu because it's rare anyone buys it.

One of the Starbucks I went to the other day said they didn't sell the sugarfree hazelnut syrup... but the other one I went to does.. so I'm assuming it's up to each individual owner/manager to decide what they sell based on customer demand. Both offer decaf, though *thankfully*..

(omg, Julie.. your wow moments... LOL)
