Default Under goal weight question

I have noticed in quite a few member that they are actually under their goal weight. I was wondering why? Is it because you want to be or because your body just kept on losing?

I think we should all be aware of that possibility and be prepared for that mentally.. there is no guarentee.

Today I met a woman who had the surgery four years ago... she said she never did, but she's still happy as she is still better than she was.. (then she started pointing to all the other women who'd had the surgery who were also at the farmer's market ... quite a few for a tiny little town here in VT)

Good question! I will be waiting for some of the Vets to answer!
I asked my doctor what his goal was and he told me 210 and my Nutritionist told me 190. I didnt think they were giving me a challenge so I set my own but really it all depends on my body. The numbers are great but being healthy & happy is soooo much better!!

Well I'm under my goal weight because that is where my body brought me. I'm not sure if it has made up it's mind or not. *L* We'll see. I sat at a weight for about a year so I figured it was happy where it was. It recently thought differently and I dropped 10-12 pounds without really changing anything. I'm not really concerned and neither is my doctor because I am barely into the "normal" range for my height and age.

When you look at someone's goal the question really isn't so much the weight, it is the BMI. What is considered a "normal" BMI really is quite the range of weights. I found it rather interesting the other day when I checked to see what my "normal" weight range was. It was 112-152. That's a 40 pound range before I would be considered "underweight".

I discussed my goal weight with both my surgeon and my pcp. Neither would really give me a goal. They were both more interested in basing my goal on my health, not the numbers. I feel good at the weight I am now. If I keep losing? Well I'll have to see how my body feels. I have no idea what 140 would feel like. I've never been there.

Default Goal was unbelievable

When my doc set goal for 145 I figured it would never happen. I got there in less than a year. Don't recall exactly when since it's been awhile.

ALL OF THE WEIGHT CHANGES BELOW HAPPENED DURING A THREE YEAR PERIOD, the last three years.

I stayed at 145 the first 2 years post op. Then had family problem and couldn't eat at all. Not WLS related. I wasted away to under 115. Ugh.

I regained the weight after working hard at it and eating heavy and as much food as I could, and went back to 140 and stayed there. Felt good.

Then after awhile with a NEW relationship I crept up to a chubby 165. Ugh.

So when I broke up with the overeating boyfriend, I easily dropped down to 145. But I continued dropping DUE TO LOTS OF STRESS AND NOT EATING ENOUGH. I'm around 130 now and am working to put on a few pounds.

I think my body is best around 140 to 145. So stress is part of being underweight. But it's something you can change by getting more calories in AND reducing the stress that caused the weight loss. That's what I'm doing right now.

The doctor is fine with this weight as long as I'm in the normal BMI. I'm healthy. That's the key.

But I feel a little too skinny...sort of. I'm not really sure if I want to be at 145. But it feels great to have THIS problem rather than taking weight OFF.

By the way, the extra 20 when I was 165 came off easily and quickly. I stopped the habits I'd picked up with the ex-boyfriend. Got back to myself and my usual habits post op and it came off quickly.

THAT is the control that the pouch gives, and using it with self-control is the other half of the equation. This is why I'll tout the surgery as the best option for Permanent Weight Loss that there is.

I don't really have any medical background so I can't tell you why, but I am under my goal weight. I think there are a couple of relevant factors. One is, your body seems to know when to level off (assuming there is nothing else wrong, health wise.)

The other is that most of us tend to give ourselves a goal within reach. Mine was 140. When I hit that, I was thrilled, but I kept droppng. When I got to 130, I was ok... didn't want to lose anymore. I tried to maintain it but couldn't. I got down to 118 or so and that really bugged me. I had to snack all day just to bump back up to 122 - 125 and that took me a good 6 - 8 months. My body seems to sit just under 125 most of the time and I seem to have settled into it. I've accepted this weight now.

I've done a little of my own research and it seems like many people who reach goal or go slightly under maybe used to be thin at one time, perhaps as kids. Just a hunch based off my own observations and questioning others who've had the surgery.

Just continued to lose the weight after I passed the 150 mark that my Dr & I set together. Lowest was 125...I have been about 130 now for over two years.

I think our bodies know where they need to be

I would love to have to gain weight. I think that is every overweight persons dream. But I agree to reach a healthy weight is the true goal. Deb
