Mike,

Summer school in CA and in this district is MANDATORY if a child is not at grade level in math and reading at the end of 4th grade.

Thank you for your offer of help via pm or phone. You may just get a message or two during the school year!

Teri

Tell her matter-of-factly. Don't sugar coat it. Don't coddle her about it. This will be easier for her because of her mobility and she really doesn't have deep roots in her new school. Children get so much of their self-concept from the messages we give them, both verbally and non-verbally.

I am a sixth grade teacher and the mother of two daughters. Best of luck to you and your granddaughter. You are doing the right thing for her. Who knows, perhaps later, in high school or later in middle school, she will skip a grade. Stranger things have happened!

I"m not an educator but I have a 10 year old daughter. First I want to say what an awesome gift you're giving your granddaughter. Giving her a stable and loving home will only help her succeed!

I would tell her and like everyone else said, be frank and honest with her. Honestly I'd tell her sooner then later to give her time to get through the emotions of it all. You know that it will probably be at least a little upsetting to her so don't wait until the week before school starts and she has all the other stress of starting school etc. to handle as well.

Also I think getting her into a few social activites is a FANTASTIC idea! My daughter does girl scouts and that is where ALL of her friends are from. I love that I know all of the girls and that they are all "little" girls still. You can call your local girl scout office and even get in touch with the local troop for your school/area. I know here they do a really cool event at the beginning of school every year called Mall Madness where they do a lock-in at a local mall. Its a lot of fun for the girls and it would be a great way for her to meet the girls in her class.

My other thought was to maybe see about having her see a psychologist. Someone who she can talk to who is an outside 3rd party, at least for a short time, might be a good idea so that she can work through and deal with her anxiety over everything. She could learn some good coping skills to help handle the stress that she's feeling, and in general become an even more well adjusted young lady.
