Fluffy, I also could not take the chewable BB vits so my Dr switched me to the swallowable 1 month after Surgery.

Thank you Tambo! What kind do you take if I may ask?
You're only a week away from my surgery date. How are you doing?

I personally couldn't stand taking chewable or liquid vitamins. I found that capsuls worked MUCH better for me. I take the bariatric vitamins that my surgery center recomments which are Vista Wellness and then I take Citracal caplets which are 315mg per pill and I take 4 of those. I space everything out throughout the day and am able to get everything in.

I found early out I did a lot better taking my vitamins with a warm liquid like tea or coffee (decaffe). It helped them go down better and to help them disolve in my pouch.

Fluffy - 2 tbs is only giving you 500mg elemental calcium. Is that the amount you were told to take?

Can't say that I enjoyed the taste of the Tropical Oasis stuff and I didn't care for the chewables either (EXCEPT for the Citracal Creamy Bites which are no longer made .... but I hear that Bariatric Advantage are bringing them out later this year! YEAH!!!).

Anyway - like Deirdrea, I like capsules.

You can get calcium citrate in capsule form and just open them up and mix them with a little bit of yogurt etc.

I like a calcium/magnesium/vitamin D3 combo.

NSI Calcium Magnesium & Vitamin D caps - NSI calcium magnesium vitamin D - Vitacost

3 caps give you:

Quote:
Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) 700 IU 175%

Calcium (elemental) 500 mg 50%

Magnesium (elemental) form: (magnesium Oxide 439 mg) 250 mg 63%

Malic Acid (from calcium malate) 650 mg *

*Daily value not established.

I think that a person is supposed to take it with every meal... I have not done that though. I take it once a day at bedtime, and then I take tums throughout the day and drink milk and that kind of thing. If I could find something I really liked, or, didn't dislike, I wouldn't mind taking it 3 times a day. I will have to look into the capsules.

Tums have calcium carbonate and so it's not really doing you any good to eat them. I would really just try to find a citrate version that you can do. They make pills in many different sizes. Just remember that you can only physically absorb 500mg at any one time so to space it out so that it breaks down to that amount. There are "petits" out there that I think are around 215-250 per tablet that might be easier to swallow then the 315mg size.

What really irritates me about that is I bought a good recommended calcium from one of the bariatric sites and took it with me for my surgeon to look at and they told me that he doesn't like any calcium but Tums..... What's up with that??

I would say that he's uneducated on the malabsorption then. The carbonate needs a LOT of stomach acid to break down for absorption. We just don't have it any more. I know that my dietitian stresses calcium citrate as the ONLY calcium that we are to take because of it. If you are unsure double check with your nutritionist/dietitian to make sure but I personally wouldn't trust my bones to tums at this point.

Fluffy, Deirdrea is right. We need to be taking Calcium Citrate. Tums has Calcium carbonate. You are running a huge risk if you are relying on Carbonate. Calcium carbonate requires gastric juices to absorb it. After RNY we no longer have gastric juices in our pouch and they aren't added back into our system until well down our digestive track and by that time, there isn't much intestines left for adequate absorption. So basicly that Calcium is passing right on through you with minimal absorption.

Even if you find your labs are coming back fine you still could be taking calcium from your bones. Your body wants to keep things in balance, so if you aren't getting in the amount of calcium that you need it WILL come from your bones. You will have no idea that you are in trouble, because your labs will be fine but your bones will be basicly turning to butter.

Do your own research. You will find all over the place that post RNY we need to be taking Calcium Citrate. The recommended dose is 1500mg/day of Elemental Calcium Citrate. Right now you are only taking 500mg a day. I know you don't like the taste of it but getting in the required calcium citrate is really important to your health. If I were you, I would increase the amount of the liquid calcium that you do take to 3 times a day and then aggressively look for something that you can tolerate for life...because it is for life.
