Not hungry
Well, I am now 2 months out from surgery. I have lost almost 80 pounds, and I feel great. I have more energy, more stamina. It has been wonderful. For the last 6-7 days though, I just do not want to eat. I am unsure if I am not hungry, or if it is the fact that after years of over eating and stuffing my face, food is now revolting to me. I see other people on TV, and in my own family, and on restuarants eating portions WAYYYY over sized and I just can not manage to put a bite of food into my mouth. My son and I went to lunch yesterday. I knew I needed to eat protein, so I got chicken. I am tired of chicken, but I figure eating chicken beats the hell out of putting back on almost 80 pounds. Anyways, back to my topic....
Does anyone else find it hard to eat? Do you find that food is just not pleasant to you any longer? I think wow this or that sounds good... I cook it nad then one bite in I have to spit it back out. It does not taste good, feels bad going down... I think I no longer like food :P
The thought of living on protein shakes is not a pleasant one either though. Any help you can provide, if anyone does know anything to get me past this hump... please let me know!
Thanks a bunch!
Wendy

i'm only 2 1/2 weeks out Wendy, but I still can't stomach anything.
Everything I put in my mouth tastes awful. I force myself to take a few bites then feel terrible for doing it.
From what others say, you go through phases like this though. I'm sure some of the longer-term guys and gals will chime in here.
I'm hoping I'll feel more like eating when I have more choices available to me

Hey Wendy...
First & foremost:
CONGRATULATONS
Ok to your question/dilemma: I'm 16+ months post-op & I can tell you there can go days & days where the sight & smell of food sicken me. I thank the man upstairs for the invention of tasteless protein powder. I sometimes survive for several days in a row on yoghurt/frozen fruit/eggwhite/protein powder smoothies. They *always* taste yummy and it is the one thing I know I can eat when I'm so tired of figuring out what I have to eat for my next meal...and I think that's my problem. I really am tired of food in general. It was SSSSOOOO much easier when I didn't have to *think* about what goes in the mouth
Hope this gives you some insight..
Nancy

I'm about 8 1/2 months and and in honesty, it isn't that can't eat - I just don't seem to have much interest in it.
I'm not even sure I have any sensation of hunger to be honest but I put that down to drinking a good 100oz plus of water a day.
So! I now eat by the clock and I make a point of eating 5-6 times a day. 2-3 meals and 3-4 snacks (piece of cheese, yogurt, almonds etc.).
It was hard getting into a routine but I do it without much thought now. Many days I have the same thing as the day before but it's all balanced out and for me anyway, it's just fuel so I just get it over with and move on to the important things in life like enjoying myself.

I'm only 3 months out, so I can totally relate.
At first, I was a big baby, whinning and complaining that I 'couldn't eat' and had to suffer through nasty protein drinks. At first it was very hard to see others enjoy the foods I used to. Now, I watch them eat and am disgusted. Two weeks after my surgery I moved on to the mushy food stage. I've been stuck there ever since. I was completely frustrated when I couldn't move into 'solid' foods at 4 weeks out. So I bitched and complained that my tummy hurt and 'oh, poor me'. What has saved me is getting into a routine. I eat and drink according to the clock. If I waited until I was hungry, hell, I'd eat one meal a week! So I have my coffee in the am. I have my protein drink at noon. Another protein drink at 6 and wrap up my day with refried beans and cheese. Same old borring thing day in and day out. It's not exciting, but I just do what I have to do every day. Water, Protein, Vitamins. Period.
Now, I focus on the fact I no longer take any medications. I absolutely LOVE ridding my new bike everywhere. I can't wait to ride my bike to Starbucks, get my Iced Americano and sit in the sun with a good book. At about 2 months out I realized that food will no longer contol me, and now I control my life. I finally realized that the sun is shinning on my face, and damn, it feels wonderful!

I am 3 months post op as well and I agree. I have to remind myself to eat not because I am hungry but because I need to do so! Its kind of a liberating feeling. Specially when you live so long with food in control of you.

As we always say in my support group... Enjoy it! It may or may not last. I'm a little over a year out and I sweep from one extreme to the other. Some days I do enjoy food. I enjoy the cooking of it and savoring the taste of it but it is more healthy and thoughtful eating then I've ever done in my life. Other days I eat the bare minimum (if that) and live on a few protein shakes and cheese.
I think of my pouch like I thought about feeding my children when they were toddlers. It all kind of evens out at the end of the week (approximately) and I know that I"m eating good things and that my body is a lot healthier then it was just a year ago.

Hey neighbor!
Im 4.5 years out and rarely experience hunger, I guess I just dont have much gherlin production. Even if you dont wanna eat, you have to. Plan 3 meals, make them small. Dont eat like longer than 10 mins and you will do fine. But if you want to lose, you have to eat.

Well .. I am 9 weeks out.. and am never actually hungry and still do not eat much solid food.... I do alot of protien shakes.. and water... with a few bites of food here and there..... I hope i make it 4 years... being this way.... I think I have finally realized how much of an emotional eater I was and how much control food had over my life. And now its just something I do to survive..... I used to live to eat... now I eat to live....

Gosh, I wish I wasn't hungry and that food repulsed me. I was pushing to eat 'regular' food after 2 weeks out and I've pushed it ever since. I'm hungry all the time AND I probably eat things that I shouldn't. I am floored that you've lost so much weight in such a short period of time..good for you! My weight loss is slow and nowhere near yours. Amanda and I had surgery on the same day and SHE has even lost WAY more weight than I have. So, I don't share your experience but I kind of wish I did.
I hope you get your appetite back and stay healthy!
