Default These may be stupid questions, but here goes...

...does anyone know if you can have the Atkins protein shakes either pre or post-op? I was on that diet several years ago and those shakes were actually pretty good. They have 1g of sugar in them. Also, I had bought a big thing of protein powder shakes from Curves a few months ago. What about them, does anyone know? (Tried the diet but couldn't do it, but am still working out 3x a week anyway). Also, how about Weight Watchers shakes? I've tried them all. I've just been reading about a lot of the yucky protein shakes and was wondering if any of these are allowed? Of course, I'd ask my doc before I used them, but was just wondering if anyone knows.

Thanks.

Of course everyone's doctor has different rules ...

I did atkins shakes before and after surgery and tolerated them without any problems.. after my biggest problem was volume (11 ounces for 17 grams of protien) so I was doing new whey protein bullets - 3.1 ounces for 42 grams of protein.. but they go down fine - just slow

I'd agree with Jacki. The Atkins protein drinks are fine and the ones I tried were 20g of protein but 11oz is a lot to get down early out.

I used the New Whey vials early out. Half a vial was only 1.5oz and gave 21g protein. I just added it to some water cause as is, they're a little thick and syrupy.

My NUT was OK with me using them very early out - working on the basis that any protein was better than none. But she was keen for me to move to a better and more complete protein supplement because the vials were basically collagen protein and scored low on the PDCAAS2 (protein score).

I can recommend vitalady.com She has a good selection of protein samples.

In the meantime, Beth has a very informative thread: Is all protein created equal?

Unjury protein powder is as good as it gets pretty much as far as the score. It's a 1.0 (100).

I love the Unjury and use it every single day at least once. I like to mix chocolate Unjury into hot (less than 130 degrees) sugar free coffee drinks from General Mills. Very yummy and easy to drink! Some days I can get more down than others, of course.

I did try Unjury early out - I got on OK with the soup but didn't care for any of the other flavours.

Unjury is a whey protein isolate and is best first thing in the morning or after exercise. It's a good choice early out from surgery as it gives you a quick boost of protein.

Whey protein appears to be better straight from exercise or early in the day when your body has extra protein requirements, but a blend of slower-absorbing proteins are better at other times because it spreads out the absorption. This helps keep amino acids in the bloodstream for use by muscle tissue as needed.

After I got over my surgery, these were recommended as being some of the better protein blend drinks and they also had a good list of amino acids: Labrada Pro V 60. Champion Nutrition Pro-Score 100.

Along with blends of protein (including whey), this is what I was also told to look for on the label:

TRYPTOPHAN (Essential Amino Acid)
A natural relaxant, helps alleviate insomnia by inducing normal sleep; reduces anxiety & depression; helps in the treatment of migraine headaches; helps the immune system; helps reduce the risk of artery & heart spasms; works with Lysine in reducing cholesterol levels.

LYSINE (Essential Amino Acid)
Insures the adequate absorption of calcium; helps form collagen (which makes up bone cartilage & connective tissues); aids in the production of antibodies, hormones & enzymes. Recent studies have shown that Lysine may be effective against herpes by improving the balance of nutrients that reduce viral growth. A deficiency may result in tiredness, inability to concentrate, irritability, bloodshot eyes, retarded growth, hair loss, anemia & reproductive problems.

METHIONINE (Essential Amino Acid)
Is a principal supplier of sulfur which prevents disorders of the hair, skin and nails; helps lower cholesterol levels by increasing the liver’s production of lecithin; reduces liver fat and protects the kidneys; a natural chelating agent for heavy metals; regulates the formation of ammonia and creates ammonia-free urine which reduces bladder irritation; influences hair follicles and promotes hair growth.

PHENYLALANINE (Essential Amino Acid)
Used by the brain to produce Norepinephrine, a chemical that transmits signals between nerve cells and the brain; keeps you awake & alert; reduces hunger pains; functions as an antidepressant and helps improve memory.

THREONINE/THERONINE (Essential Amino Acid)Is an important constituent of collagen, Elastin, and enamel protein; helps prevent fat buildup in the liver; helps the digestive and intestinal tracts function more smoothly; assists metabolism and assimilation.

VALINE (Essential Amino Acid)
Promotes mental vigor, muscle coordination and calm emotions.

LEUCINE & ISOLEUCINE (Essential Amino Acids)
They provide ingredients for the manufacturing of other essential biochemical components in the body, some of which are utilized for the production of energy, stimulants to the upper brain and helping you to be more alert.

ARGININE
Studies have shown that it has improved immune responses to bacteria, viruses & tumor cells; promotes wound healing and regeneration of the liver; causes the release of growth hormones; considered crucial for optimal muscle growth and tissue repair.

TYROSINE
Transmits nerve impulses to the brain; helps overcome depression; Improves memory; increases mental alertness; promotes the healthy functioning of the thyroid, adrenal and pituitary glands.

GLYCINE
Helps trigger the release of oxygen to the energy requiring cell-making process; important in the manufacturing of hormones responsible for a strong immune system.

SERINEA storage source of glucose by the liver and muscles; helps strengthen the immune system by providing antibodies; synthesizes fatty acid sheath around nerve fibers.

GLUTAMIC ACID/GLUTAMINE
Considered to be nature’s “Brain food” by improving mental capacities; helps speed the healing of ulcers; gives a “lift” from fatigue; helps control alcoholism, schizophrenia and the craving for sugar.

ASPARTIC ACID
Aids in the expulsion of harmful ammonia from the body. When ammonia enters the circulatory system it acts as a highly toxic substance, which can be harmful to the central nervous system. Recent studies have shown that Aspartic Acid may increase resistance to fatigue and increase endurance.

TAURINE
Helps stabilize the excitability of membranes which is very important in the control of many biochemical changes that take place in the aging process; aids in the clearing of free radical wastes.

CYSTINE
Functions as an antioxidant and is a powerful aid to the body in protecting against radiation and pollution. It can help slow down the aging process, deactivate free radicals, neutralize toxins; aids in protein synthesis and prevents cellular change. It is necessary for the formation of the skin, which aids in the recovery from burns and surgical operations. Hair and skin are made up of 10-14% Cystine.
HISTADINE Found abundantly in hemoglobin; has been used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, allergic diseases, ulcers & anemia. Deficiency can cause poor hearing.

PROLINE
Is extremely important for the proper functioning of joints and tendons; also helps maintain and strengthen heart muscles.

ALANINE
Is an important source of energy for muscle tissue, the brain and central nervous system; Strengthens the immune system by producing antibodies; helps in the metabolism of sugars and organic acids.
