Exclamation Urgent!!! Need protein help quick!

Okay, I'll start this by admitting I'm an idiot. I'm supposed to start my pre-op diet tomorrow, and I just started calling local stores this morning to locate what I wanted. Well, NO ONE has the Nectar Syntrx that I had planned to purchase. (I had a sample of the Fuzzy Navel and kind of liked it.) I called all of the GNC's and the Vitamin World around. Those are the only places that I know of that I have around here.

I can't have milk on my pre-op, so I have to be able to mix my protein shake with water. So far all of the ones I've tried taste like complete crap, even with water mixed in.

The only option I've found so far available locally (and mixable with water, and palatable) is the New Whey Liquid Protein vials. The Vitamin World store at the mall has cases of fruit punch and orange ones. Other than this, can anyone else please recommend a good taste protein that I can mix with WATER? And that I don't have to order over the internet.

Yes, I know that I'm an idiot for waiting until the last minute, but I had the week from hell and totally forgot about ordering it. Any suggestions, please?

Thanks!

First, breathe.....

Second, since it's pre-op, it's an inconvenience...post -op, when you absolutely must take in protein, then you can freak out. Plus, what you might like now you may absolutely hate later.

Why no milk? What about soy "milk"?

Even though it's only 5g of protein, you can try the Special K protein water. The Tea flavor is really good--just let it sit for a few minutes so that everything dissolves.

Also, don't forget about your coupon to GNC for the Designer Whey.

You could also try the Isopure fruit drinks that they sell at Vitamin Shoppe. I liked them okay pre-op, but couldn't stand them post-op.

Go to the Vitamin Shoppe or GNC and just browse around. There's lots of choices. Just don't commit to big sizes yet--your tastes are going to change after surgery! You don't want to have this big stash on hand...

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Marie. Okay, I must admit to being confused...if I go 10 days without any protein, aren't I going to get very weak? I still have to go to work until the day of surgery, so I can't be falling asleep at my desk.

Yes, absolutely no milk, or soy milk. I checked, and then double checked with 2 different people while at my pre-op appointment since I was surprised by that. This is what I'm allowed:

*Fruit juices - apple, grape, or cranberry (diluted 1/2 strength w/ water)
*Broths - clear beef, chicken, or vegetable broths
*S.F. decaff coffee and tea (no cream or cream substitute), iced coffee and iced tea
*S.F. jello
*S.F. popsicles or frozen S.F. juice bars
*S.F. Kool-Aod, Crystal Lite, or store brand S.F. drinks
*Gatorade (diluted 1/2 strength w/ water)
*Water
*Artificial sweeteners (Sweet n Low, NutraSweet, Splenda)
*No carbonated or caffeinated beverages
*Protein powders (mixable w/ water, w/ no sugar. Unjury was given as an example although certain others were okay as well.)

Wow, I just re-read by original post and saw all of the typos! Oops!

Thanks Mike, I will look for the Special K Iced T powder...hopefully it is not caffeinated. I bought the Pink Lemonade flavor already, it's a bit too strong for my tastes, even mixed with 32 oz of water.

I forgot about that coupon I posted. That tells you about the hellish week I had, lol. I'll have to see if that one is mixable with water.

We don't have a Vitamin Shoppe around here, just a Vitamin World and GNC, so unfortunately my options are kind of limited. If all else fails, I'll use the New Whey that they have available at the Vitamin World store until my Vitacost order arrives.

Right now, I'm kind of ticked off at myself anyway. When I had my pre-op appointment Friday, the RN and Physician Assistant both gave me instructions for a FIVE day pre-op diet. After I saw both of them, I saw the surgeon. My big mouth opened and asked him, "So, I only have to do a five day pre-op diet? Not a longer one?" After I asked that, he said, "Well, go ahead and do it for ten days instead." Me and my big mouth.

So Mike, did you use protein powder while on your pre-op? I'm just afraid that I'll get weak without protein. I know I have plenty of fat to live off, but I don't want to fall asleep at my desk or anything.

I had to buy protein drinks and bars from my dr's office for my pre-op diet... funny they didn't have a specific plan for you. I was on Nutri-med... pretty tasty product, maybe too sugary for post op... I have some leftover... want me to send it to you? PM your address hon!

Go ahead and psych yourself up. 90% of this is a mind game. Your body WILL react to no food and just protein, but if you can get through the first couple of days, the next few will be easier.

The point of this is to lose a little and shrink the liver, making it easier for the surgeon and safer for you.

As far as me, I wasn't required to do any pre-op diet, but I did it anyway for a few days before the surgery. I wanted things to go as smoothly as possible and I also didn't want to spend the entire time in the hospital on the toilet.

As for protein, I could have milk, so I used chocolate protein powders and the New Whey Vials (which I couldn't stand post-op). I put the New Whey in with Fruit PUnch or Cherry crystal light and it worked great for me.

Honestly, the first few days of any liquid diet suck...even with Syntrax. You'll probably be tired, regardles of what you're taking in. But, you'll make it and everything will be just fine.

Mike is right..the Special K iced tea is jammin...drink it every work out and they carry it at Wal-Mart. And the New Whey vials are...eh...not awful. But I had to stick with the orange ones...the rest tasted like dreck.

As far as calling yourself an idiot? Stop that!!! You're not an idiot, you're just a tad pre-occupied. Go figure...LOL.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm somewhat calmer now.

I did an order on Vitacost just now, and ponied up an extra $8 for 2 day air shipping. The Vitamin World at the mall has New Whey vials, so I'm making a trip there to buy some of those. (And they're on sale this week, for anyone who normally buys them.) Like you all advised, I'm not overbuying, just getting enough to get me through the next couple of weeks or so.

I'm getting ready to have my "Last Supper" (for awhile anyway!), which is going to be a nice meal of beef roast (currently in the slow cooker), potatoes, and celery. I'm going to strain and save all of the wonderful beef broth for the upcoming weeks. I'm sure it will taste much better than the store bought stuff, and have much less sodium.

Again, thanks to all of you. I love my TT peeps!
