Default Fage

Okay, I've looked at Wal-Mart, Kroger, IGA and I can not find Fage yogurt. I take it would be by or near the other yogurts?? If I can't find is there a 2nd choice? I'm still a couple months away from surgery but trying to get all my ducks in a row.

Thanks ~Vicki~

You can email them and ask where you can locate their products.. they respond within 24 hours, usually.

The fage website does not list Kentucky as a state in which they sell. They do have a toll free number so you can call them....

Default finally found it

I found some in a Upstate, NY grocery store called Wegmans, they had it in the natural foods area.

They only had "total", which looked like 100 % of everything (fat, etc) and Zero fat. There was a spot for a lite version but it was empty. So a got a small zero to give it a try. If I like it, it will be worth the cost for the additional protein.

Thanks to everyone who has provide information about this product. I learn so much from this site!

I can't find Fage anywhere in Asheville. I did find another Greek yogurt, Oiykos (I think that's how it's spelled) and I now love it! I use it for thickening and extra protein in my daily protein shakes now. It is very good!

You can make you own "greek" yogurt by straining plain yogurt. I remember people posting it on the lowcarbfriends website when I used to do Atkins. I've never tried it because I never quite cared for Greek yogurt but I hope you can use these instructions.

3. Straining the Whey
More potentially good news for low-carbers: It turns out that most of the lactose in milk and yogurt is in the whey. Furthermore, it is easy to strain much of the whey out of yogurt, and at least one company, FAGE, sells strained Greek-style yogurt. To strain the whey out of yogurt yourself, put a coffee filter in a strainer or colander and put that over a bowl in the refrigerator overnight. What will be left is sometimes called “yogurt cheese,” which has a consistency that can reach the thickness of soft cream cheese if enough whey drains off. This can be eaten any way you want or mixed with other ingredients for foods such as dips. How many carb grams can you deduct for straining? There's no really great way to tell for sure, but FAGE Classic Greek yogurt claims it has 6 grams of carb for a 7-oz. serving. Another advantage to straining yogurt is that the concentrated yogurt has more protein per cup.

After I was browsing this Socialize forum I went over to the Nutrition forum and someone had posted a similar reference to creating your own with another website with instructions. Check it out too. I didn't go to it but the post made it sound like there were a few recipes.

That one ladytonya mentioned, thinking it's called 'Oiykos' I found it in the organic section at Kroger here by my house. It seems to be about the same as Fage as far as protein and such, I can't vouch for any differences in taste though, I haven't had Fage.

My favorite variety of Fage is the 2%...I'm afraid to try the full fat version because I'm afraid I'll like it even better and it's too high in fat, lol. I've bought the Oikos brand at Super Walmart before, but they only have it in 0% which isn't as yummy. It's okay in a pinch though.

Like someone above said, email the company. I was able to find it at some other places however. I live in Pennsylvania, and I can get it at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Giant Eagle, and my local health food store. Sometimes it is NOT the regular yogurt section. At my Giant Eagle for example, it is by the dairy section in the organic food section.

Thanks for all the help guys. Anyone that has bought fage know the life span of the product? I think I can get it in TN, but is one of them things I wouldnt be able to get but maybe once a month. I may ask at my local store if they can order it, sometimes they are good about that and sometimes not.... won't hurt to ask though.

Thanks Aspiemom for the recipe, I may have to end of trying that.
