Have you test driven the Commander? That was my first choice before I started thinking about all the gas it would cost. I couldn't afford a Hummer, so I tried the Commander out. I got in the back seat to see how much room there was, and I swear to God, no lie, I'm a virgin again it was so tight. There's no way I could sit back there with the baby on a trip. I'd end up with gangrene from the thighs down!

I want something sporty and little now...easy on the wallet with the gas and a bright "look at me, here I come" color.

Sherry,

I went and looked at the Hyundai website. I'm not really feeling the Elantra, but I really liked the Tucson. I may even go test drive it this weekend. It's a little more, but I like the features, and I like the Sage Green color--sure, it's not the bright orange I was looking for in the Fit, but I also like the red and the blue as well. I'm losing favor with the Toyota, because I just think it's too low to the ground, the Fit is up a little more, and the Tucson seems to SUV height. I'm still hinging on the gas mileage and being able to get into the back seat without hitting high notes or sitting on my junk. I just need to drive a few and see how they feel. Honestly, if I can find a decent stereo system with wheels in a bright color with good gas mileage and not a sedan look--I'm good to go. (I don't want much, do I?)

I don't care how it handles in the snow. If it's that bad out...I'll call in sick!

-Mike

If it's that bad out... they'll cancel school!

The Tuscon is the small SUV I am thinking of getting. I haven't test driven one yet though. I think they are adorable!!

Well I have no experience with the Honda Fit, however, my mom has a Pontiac Vibe in a bright red, and it get's about 30MPG...31 if I'm driving and it is just about exactly like the Scion XA, and we love it. That's what I want to get when I'm ready for my own car. Happy shopping.

Oh, what about the newer Ford Focus? It says it get's 35MGP now, and it has that cool music thing.

When we got our Elantra last year, we looked at the Tucsons too and really liked them. We decided on the Elantra though because of the cheaper price and the better gas mileage....and since it's our 3rd car, I felt the need to economize (although it really doesn't feel like an economy car).

If you like the Tucsons, check out the Kia equivalent...I forget the name. Kia is now owned by Hyundai, so it's basically the same vehicle, but a tad cheaper. They have a funky bright blue color that you might like.

I saw a Honda Fit "in person" today....the first time that I had ever noticed one. Geez, they are small little buggers, but cute.

I'm lol at your qualifications for a vehicle. As a woman, I hadn't thought about some of those! My kid is a teenager now, but I can't say that I worried too much about the comfort of the back seat, and how it pertained to me when he was younger. Honestly, I never got back there with him. I plopped him in the car seat (from outside), buckled him in, and drove. By the time he was 1 year old, he was climbing into the car seat himself, and trying to buckle himself in. Most of the time I had 2 door cars, and it still worked out easy. So, it was always pretty much a non-issue with me, even on road trips.

Have fun with the car shopping. Here's a good government website to compare fuel economy: Find a Car

Isn't the Vibe the one that looks like a SHOE?

The Pontiac Vibe is actually the identical twin of the Toyota Matrix....they are actually made in the same exact factory. The only difference is the grill, the badging, and a few minor cosmetic differences. Oh, and the price....the Pontiac Vibe is thousands cheaper than the Toyota Matrix, because for some reason, Americans are more than willing to pay a premium for the Toyota name.

I heard an odd story about the new Ford Focus last week. My neighbor told me he was at a local grocery store and a girl in a brand new Focus had a flat tire, and a tow truck came and towed her away! The reason? The new Focuses do NOT have a spare tire! Really, there is NO excuse for that, other than some accountant pinching pennies. I had a Focus several years ago, and the trunk is large...more than enough room for a donut tire in there. Of course, the price of the tow would have been covered by the tow plan you get with all new Fords, but would you really want to have to tow your car for a simple flat? How stupid. Now, I do own a car that does not have a spare, but it's a small sports car, and simply does not have the room for one. For my own peace of mind, I do not drive this car on long trips, because God forbid I'd get a flat tire that couldn't be fixed, because I'd be royally screwed. But why do this by choice in a car that definitely has room for a spare donut tire?

Snort! I'm picturing a high top sneaker with big shiny spinner wheels!

Nah, my neighbors have a Vibe. It looks more like a wedge of cheese.
