I work a large international travel company and manage one of the small branches here in the UK. I'm lucky enough that this job gets me free trips throughout the year to explore some pretty fascinating places.
The funny thing is that I have worked for them for seven years - have been offered several free trips every year and never taken them. I can now admit that I never took them because I was embarassed by my weight. I was too ashamed to get on a plane and 'spew' over into my colleagues seat and have them see me ask for a seatbelt extension. I have turned down places like Brazil, Vietnam, Japan, Norway, Washington, South Africa and many more - just crazy!
This surgery has given me the freedom to live my life for the first time ever. For that I will be forever grateful!
I think I was really lucky with food while I was away - the lil ol pouch decided to be my friend for 10 days. I didn't have a single dumping episode or uncomfortableness.
I pretty much stuck to the protein - having things like stir fry chicken, beef and pork, a few noodles along the way and of course lots of steamed veggies. I had my first ever taste of ice cream since surgery. Mint choc chip - just one scoop and thats satisfied my cravings for another year! It was sooooo devine!
We had a chinese tour guide with us so helped me out a lot - it was pretty hard going to find out if there was sugar in things - she didn't really understand me and I was a bit worried that I would end up dumping but it was all pretty logical really, if the sauce was spicy or red I stayed away from it - if it was clear I went for it.
I can't believe I didn't put on any weight - I felt like I ate like a horse but I guess I was still around 1000 cals per day so it was what my body needed.
I would definitely recommend to anyone that gets the chance to go to China. It has a fascinating history and such a diverse group of people. And hey we've only got one of these new lives so why not get out there and live it!
If you don't mind my asking... what type of work do you do that brought you to China? Did you have an interpreter with you? What kinds of things did you eat? Right now, we are still pretty cautious of eating new things. You were very brave to try new things that far from home.
