Default Today on OPRAH

Today on Oprah I saw a teaser that said something like
"They thought Weight Loss Surgery was the answer, but they never expected this...." hinting at something bad..

I looked at the description..its titled "The aftermath of WLS"...seems to be a repeat, but I had never seen it.

We'll see what it is. I'm going to tape it.

Go to www.oprah.com - gives you a bit more of a peek. I think she'll show the good stuff too - Carnie Wilson's on and she's a fan of wls obviously!!

Tell me what happens - I'll have to wait a year or so before it airs in South Africa!!!

I won't be a spoiler...but I turned it off after the statement "most people who get this surgery are looking for a quick fix.". GRRRRRR

I'm watching it right now....so far its about turning to alcoholism and sex addiction after surgery. I haven't seen the Crnie Wilson part yet.

Basically they talked about the addiction transfer syndrome, where people lose the weight and then find they need to deal with issues emotionally and it manifests in coping by using alcohol or in some other way.

They were bagging on the fact that most WLS patients only are required one hour of psych eval...probably should be more...because when the coping mechanism of food is gone, and the emotions are still there, people need to find a way to cope. They said the emotions will sometimes feel more prevalent because they can't be stuffed down with food any more.

All good points...however I was a little perturbed that Oprah said that Gastic Bypass is like going in and getting your teeth cleaned...that people go in and don't consider the consequences....I know most of on this forum anyhow DO spend an awful lot of time pondering all the ramifications...despite the fact only one hour of psych eval was required...I think we all spent a lot of time evaluating it before doing it.

They said that sex change patients are required to live a year as the opposite sex before their operation...but again focused on the fact that WLS patients only had one psych session...a very weird comparison if you ask me....how is that similar???? They talked about how all the issues which made you fat in the first place needed to be recognized and dealt with or they would cause other problems post surgery...I think most of us know that...
