Default Advice...You All Always Have Great Ideas

The cost of gas is just about to KILL me. I have to fill my tank every 3 1/2 days at $60 a pop. If I could trade my car in and get an economy car, I would...that's not an option.

Soooo...my boss let's me work from home OCCASIONALLY...like yesterday I worked from home because of an unexpected babysitter snafu. She will let me work from home when I have an appointment that is near my home in the middle of the day so that I don't have to take off any vacation or sick time. She is pretty flexible and I really appreciate that. BUT...I would LOVE to work from home 1 or 2 (2 being better obviously) days. I do not know how in the heck to approach her about it. I have googled some ideas and they all say to make a plan and that all the reasons for working from home should benefit the company and not the employee. I can think of NOTHING that would benefit my company by letting me work from home. Also...my boss is intimidating, so whenever I request to work from home it is always in email...never face to face. She has never said no, but I always feel like she might be irritated...but I could be reading into things. Sooooo...here's where you guys come in...what can I say that would sound legit to work from home??

There are only a few things I can't do from home...like filing...but I am more then willing to file my stuff on the days I am in the office...pretty much everything else can be done from home. I work on the computer ALL day and I am hooked up at home to log into all of our company systems and the network.

Yes, there are other people in my company that work from home...but they aren't in my department.

Maybe negotiate to work every Friday in the office so you can file and show some face.

Can't hurt to put together a plan.

Don't ever be afraid of the MFIC...They are human too.

GL,

BTW~ If The MFIC likes the Friday thingy, I will send you my addy for $20 starbucks Gift card....

I just want to work from home a couple of days a week...like Tues. and Thurs....I wouldn't want to ask for Mon. or Fri...because that would seem like I am aiming for a long weekend every week.

I want to put together a plan...but I can not think of any way that it will benefit them...

Cindy,
At the moment, I don't have any brilliant suggestions but was just wondering...does anyone else in your department work from home? If they do, maybe this won't be as difficult to negotiate as you think. If you're the trailblazer then, of course, you'll have to sell yourself. If others are working from home, do you know any of them well enough to ask how they pitched it to the...what did Van call her?...the MFIC?
Good luck!

What is the price of gas? Here its $106.99 for a litre and 4 litlres makes up a jug of milk. Now I understand yours in by the gallon, which is diffrerent than our gallon.

Costs me over $100 to fill up our truck, about $80 to fill up the van and the truck we get about 240 miles on the tank and the van about 390 miles per tank.....

CRAZY!!!!!! I hear in the UK, its even more!

Default what about this, Cindy?

Working from home makes you a happier employee, one who doesn't want to leave the job. Happy employees are productive employees, something MFIC's love. Your plan sounds very pro-company (the Monday/Friday thing). Ask MFIC if you can give it a month's trial, and if they have any reservations that you aren't doing a full day's work, etc, then you'll go back to the commute. Be prepared to demonstrate all the work you can do from home.

Good luck--I think you have a grand idea, and I used to be a MFIC!

Hi! I work for one of the largest financial/insurance companies in the world. Within the last 2 or 3 years, they have really been expanding the number of people who can "tele-commute". I have been able to telecommute myself, a number of times in the last year when I was working independently on a project. (It was very nice to drag the laptop out onto the deck this summer!) Now I'm trying to make it a more regular thing. My argument? "Business continuity"! If there were a serious problem with the building, such as fire, flood, earthquake, or there was an epidemic of Avian Flu or measles, I would be able to carry on, business as usual, from the security (and comfort) of my home. It's pretty nice to have the coffee maker only a few feet away and it's nice to get supper started while on a conference call too!
