Kim,
It varies from doctor to doctor. Unfortunately, some doctors sit on their consults until the referring physician practically reaches in and pulls it out their...well, you get the picture. I once worked for once such man. I used to to get other doctors calling and yelling at me every day because they assumed the visit was already dictated and I was the one responsible for not sending it out.
Here are some suggestions:
1) Have your surgeon's office (preferably the surgeon himself) place a curt phone call letting them know he's holding up the process.
2) Write a letter of complaint yourself and send it registered mail. (if you do this, I'm willing to look it over and punch it up for you. I'm good at this.)
3) Go in and ask in person every week. Take your mother or someone with you. This has a dual effect a) It embarrasses them and b) They will want you out of their hair.
4) Do all three above for maximum effectiveness.
Btw, if you do #3, make sure you let them know that you will be back on such and such a date and will expect to be handed a copy at that time. Make sure you follow up. If they say they already sent it, demand a copy. They ALWAYS make copies.
Hope this helps!
