Default The Baron's Manic Musings

I can't believe I've not been doing this for a few weeks! Hope everyone had a great holiday, and for us in So. Cal - hope you were able to keep cool. It was only 108 at my house on Saturday!

The Say What? Department –

As with everyone else this holiday weekend, my family was invited to a BBQ. Some people have not seen me since my surgery, and were quite surprised of my “new” appearance. A few suggested to my wife that now I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight, I may “stray.” My wife and I have been together for over 21 years. In this day of easily walking away and divorces, I truly don’t see this happening with me. I worship the ground she walks. We’re more than just a married couple – lovers, best friends, partners. She (and our son) are the best things that have ever happened to me, and I adore and love them more and more each day. I’m sure their intentions are good, but then, isn’t Hell paved with them? Honestly, we are closer now than we’ve ever been!

The “You Hold Your Weight Well” Department –

I didn’t expect this to happen so soon. The cashier we know at the grocery also said I don’t need to lose any more weight. When I told her what I weighed before the surgery, she was very surprised and said I held my weight very well (which I do.) Slim people have no perception of what “we” go through. The low self-esteem, our self perception, and the perpetual paranoia (some of which is justified) of what people think when we are out in public.

The State of Obesity Department –

A news story came out proclaiming Mississippi as being the “heaviest” state in the union with over 30% of the population being obese (with West Virginia and Alabama right behind). In contrast, Colorado came in as the leanest with 17.6% obesity population. Among children ages 10 to 17, the District of Columbia had the highest with 22.8% and Utah with the lowest at 8.5%.

At the Flickers Department –

If you’re a horror/thriller fan, you gotta see the remake of Halloween directed by Rob Zombie. It’s absolutely awesome. I had the pleasure of seeing it Friday night with a packed theater of teens! This time around, we get to learn of Michael Myers background, and why he turned out the way he did. Every time Michael seemed to twitch, the girls would start screaming – it was loads of fun. For those from my generation, keep a look out for a cameo of Mickey Dolenz from the Monkee’s - I almost didn’t recognize him!

Disturbia (a play on the word “Suburbia”) is another good one, now out on DVD. It’s based on the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window. This is about a kid who is serving house arrest after clocking his Spanish teacher. The cops put a GPS locator on his ankle to keep him around the house. He witness’s what he thinks is a murder at his neighbors house, and enlists his friends to help him prove it. Be sure to turn the lights out when you watch it!

Complications Department –

My heart goes out to those who’ve had severe complications from WLS. In a way, it’s kind of a “dirty secret” of how bad things can go, and we simply don’t want to hear or consider the potential problems weight loss surgery can have. From what I’ve read, these “information meetings” don’t go very deep into the complications (it would scare the bejeebers out of a lot of people), and the surgeon/Bariatric Center could lose potential customers if they go to deep in this area. It’s not all sunshine and lollypops for a lot of people. I sincerely hope and pray our friends get the help they need (whether it’s a revision or reversal or whatever) so they can also live a healthy life.

Exchanging Clothes Department –

My wife purchased a couple pair of shorts for me at the Ralph Lauren Polo factory store. In a matter of two weeks they became too big for me. So what to do? We took them back to the store and exchanged them. Since we still had the receipt, we had no problem. So, what size? I went from 40 to 38! Oh, and I’m STILL finding clothes in my closet that are too big for me! Boy, my wardrobe is really thinning out!

Loved this - really strikes a cord with so many people telling both Mike and I to stop losing weight, we must have carried the weight well, "you didn't look that fat" - there's a classic! What gets me, is that these are the same people who judged us before as being too lazy, too stupid, too...something... to lose the weight. It's like with a certain group of people, we're never going to win. I'm learing to ignore them.

P.S. In Iowa, it was only 90.
